‘One secret to reveal…’ – Fabrizio Romano says Man Utd made ‘surprise’ late move for £200,000-a-week star

In the closing hours of the summer transfer market, Manchester United made an attempt to recruit Conor Gallagher, a midfielder for Atletico Madrid, according to senior reporter Fabrizio Romano of GIVEMESPORT.

According to reports, the Old Trafford team looked into a loan agreement for the former Chelsea star, but Atletico rejected their offer since they didn’t want to consider the England international’s late departure.

This summer, Gallagher was also a goal for Crystal Palace, who hope to buy the 25-year-old for £200,000 per week in addition to Villarreal winger Yeremy Pino, who arrived last week.

Under head coach Diego Simeone, Gallagher, who moved from Chelsea to Atletico in August of last year, has made three appearances off the bench in La Liga so far this season.

Man United Tried to Sign Conor Gallagher

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, revealed that Man United tried to sign Gallagher in the last 48 hours of the summer window but saw their efforts snubbed by Atletico:

“One secret to reveal from the summer transfer window is about Manchester United.

“In the last 48 hours of the summer transfer window, Man United tried to sign Conor Gallagher.

“Man United considered the possibility of going for Conor Gallagher. Then it was not possible to make it happen, because Man United wanted to sign Gallagher on a loan deal, while Atletico Madrid had already rejected an approach from Crystal Palace 10 days ago for Conor Gallagher on loan.

“The top targets for Palace were Conor Gallagher and Yeremy Pino. Yeremy Pino arrived.

“Gallagher, they tried to bring him back to the club. If I remember well, he was already player of the season at Palace in 2022, so he knows the club very well.

“But then the answer from Atletico to Manchester United was no, no chance to that surprise proposal made by Manchester United in the final hours of the summer transfer window.”

In the last month of the summer transfer window, Man United was searching for a new midfield player after their attempt to sign top target Carlos Baleba failed.

Brighton refused to give up the 21-year-old midfield player for a lower price, sticking to their rumored £120 million asking price, which would have made Baleba the most costly United acquisition ever.

Instead, United chose to sign Belgium international Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp as their goalkeeper on transfer deadline day.

Along with forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, the 23-year-old goalkeeper was the Red Devils’ fifth and final summer acquisition, costing £18 million plus add-ons.
