The Premier League award season is officially underway, and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has stirred the pot with a controversial take on Manchester United’s standout performer. While the world is raving about Bruno Fernandes who just broke David Beckham’s assist record and earned his new nickname “Braino Fernandes” from Henry himself the Frenchman has clarified that his pick for the PFA Player of the Year actually lies elsewhere in the United squad.
In a surprising twist, Henry suggested that while Bruno’s numbers are “out of this world,” the “foundational excellence” of another player is what has truly allowed the Carrick Revolution to succeed.
“Fans Are Overlooking Him”
Speaking on Sky Sports, Henry explained that the obsession with goals and assists often blinds supporters to the most difficult roles on the pitch.
“Bruno doesn’t deserve to be the Premier League Player of the Season because his brilliance is expected now. The only Manchester United player I truly rate for that award is Kobbie Mainoo,” Henry revealed. “I honestly don’t understand why fans are overlooking his performances. Henry’s endorsement of the young England international stems from Mainoo’s “frightening” maturity in the middle of the park. Since Michael Carrick took over, Mainoo has become the “metronome” of the team, boasting a 94% pass completion rate the highest of any midfielder in the top four.
Henry argued that while Bruno provides the “magic,” Mainoo provides the “structure.”
“If you take Bruno out, they lose creativity. If you take Mainoo out, the whole system collapses,” Henry noted. “For me, that is the definition of the Player of the Season. He has been the most consistent young player I have seen in this league for a decade.”
