The Attwell Files: Are the Stats Proof of a “Man Utd Agenda”?
Following Manchester United’s controversial 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Friday night, a statistical deep dive into referee Stuart Attwell’s history with the club has gone viral, sparking claims of a deep-seated bias.
Attwell has now officiated 24 Manchester United matches across all competitions. For many fans, the discrepancy in how he manages United games compared to their opponents is no longer a coincidence—it’s a pattern.
The “Lopsided” Numbers
A review of Attwell’s 24 games in charge of the Red Devils reveals a staggering gulf in disciplinary action:
Red Cards: United players have been sent off 2 times (including Harry Maguire’s straight red on Friday). In those same 24 games, opposition players have received 0 red cards.
Yellow Cards: The gap is even wider here. United players have been cautioned 46 times, while their opponents have seen yellow just 8 times.
The Result Curve: Under Attwell’s whistle, United have struggled significantly, recording 5 losses and 5 draws a record far below the club’s usual win percentage.
The Bournemouth “Double Standard”
The fire was stoked further by the specific events on Friday night. In the second half, Amad Diallo appeared to be hauled down in the box by Adrien Truffert. Attwell waved play on, and VAR—led by Simon Hooper—refused to intervene, despite replays showing clear contact. Bournemouth scored their equalizer just seconds later.
Contrastingly, when Harry Maguire made a similar challenge on Evanilson later in the half, Attwell did not hesitate to point to the spot and brandish a straight red card.
United Take Action
The club is reportedly not taking this lightly. Following Michael Carrick’s post-match comments where he labeled the officiating “mental” and “astonishing,” Manchester United officials are set to file a formal complaint to PGMOL.
The complaint is expected to highlight the lack of consistency in the “threshold” for fouls and the statistical anomaly that seems to follow Attwell whenever he takes charge of a United fixture.
