The “Pitbull” of Molineux: Manchester United Plot Midfield Raid for JoĂŁo Gomes
As Manchester United prepares for a ÂŁ450M “structural upgrade” this summer, a new name has surged to the top of the INEOS shortlist. According to Manchester Evening News reporter Tyrone Marshall, United are closely monitoring Wolves midfielder JoĂŁo Gomes as a key component of their planned engine-room overhaul.
With Wolves currently battling the grim reality of a potential drop to the Championship, the “Pitbull” is expected to be one of the first big names out of the door at Molineux.
The “Ugarte Domino”: Financing the Move
For many United analysts, the logic behind signing Gomes is simple: efficiency. To make the numbers work, reports suggest United are looking to secure a permanent sale for Manuel Ugarte this summer.
Despite joining with high expectations, Ugarte has struggled to adapt to the “Carrick Revolution,” with the manager preferring the technical composure of Kobbie Mainoo and the veteran leadership of Casemiro. By offloading Ugarte to interested parties in Italy or France, United could effectively “self-fund” the move for Gomes without dipping too deep into their primary war chest.
The “Midfield Three” Strategy
Under the new INEOS recruitment model, Gomes isn’t being targeted to be the “poster boy” of the midfield. Instead, he is viewed as the “Perfect Third Option”:
The Anchor: Carlos Baleba (Personal terms reportedly agreed).
The Metronome: Kobbie Mainoo (The untouchable starter).
The Disruptor: JoĂŁo Gomes (The high-intensity backup/rotation).
Gomes’ recent displays have been a rare bright spot for a struggling Wolves side. His elite tackling stats and “never-say-die” attitude make him an ideal candidate to provide the defensive cover United often lack during high-pressure away games.
Relegation “Fire Sale” Pricing
If Wolves’ relegation is confirmed, United will be in a prime position to negotiate. While his market value is currently estimated at £45M–£50M, a Championship-bound Wolves would have little leverage to demand a record fee.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Omar Berrada are reportedly keen to avoid the “United Tax” that plagued previous windows, viewing the Gomes deal as a “Smart Move” that balances top-tier Premier League experience with a sensible price tag.
The “Carrick Prototype” Check
Does he fit the system?
Work Rate: Elite. Gomes ranks in the top 5% of midfielders for tackles and interceptions.
Durability: High availability a key requirement for the “INEOSonomics” model.
Tactical Fit: Can play as a lone #6 or in a double pivot, giving Michael Carrick the flexibility to switch between 4-3-3 and his preferred 4-2-3-1.
While names like Sandro Tonali and Eduardo Camavinga represent the “dream” targets, JoĂŁo Gomes represents the “serious club” business required to build a squad with genuine depth.
