FACT-CHECK: The “Replay” Hoax Why the 2–2 Draw Stands Despite VAR Chaos
Fans and blogs are currently circulating a story that the Premier League has ordered a replay of the Matchweek 31 clash between Bournemouth and Manchester United due to “corruption.”
This is a total fabrication. The match result is official and has already been recorded in the Premier League table. The “controversy” stems from Michael Carrick’s post-match comments regarding the officiating, not a legal challenge to the game’s validity.
1. The “Injustice” That Sparked the Rumors
The talk of a replay started because of two nearly identical incidents that were handled differently by referee Stuart Attwell and VAR:
Incident A (The Non-Penalty): While United led 1–0, Amad Diallo was brought down in the box by Adrien Truffert. The referee waved play on, and Bournemouth immediately broke down the other end to score their first equalizer through Ryan Christie.
Incident B (The Red Card): Later in the game, Harry Maguire was judged to have committed a similar foul on Evanilson. This time, a penalty was awarded to Bournemouth, and Maguire was shown a straight red card.
The Fallout: Michael Carrick labeled the inconsistency as “crazy” and “baffling,” leading to United reportedly filing an official complaint against the match officials—but a complaint is not a request for a replay.
2. Match Highlights: Bournemouth 2–2 Manchester United
61′ — Bruno Fernandes (Pen): United took the lead after Matheus Cunha was fouled by Alex Jimenez.
67′ — Ryan Christie: The Cherries equalized just seconds after the controversial Amad penalty shout.
71′ James Hill (OG): United retook the lead after a wicked Bruno Fernandes corner was deflected into his own netby the Bournemouth defender.
81′ Junior Kroupi (Pen): Following Maguire’s red card, the substitute converted from the spot to rescue a point for the hosts.
3. League Implications: No “Title Picture” Impact
The viral post claims this “replay” affects the title race, but the math says otherwise:
The Top 4 Race: The draw actually hurt United’s push for a top-three finish, leaving them 55 points in 3rd place well behind leaders Arsenal (70 pts).
The “Unbeaten” Streak: The result extended Bournemouth’s impressive unbeaten run to 11 matches, keeping them comfortably in 10th place.
4. Where Did the “Replay” Idea Come From?
The hoax likely recycled an old news story from May 2016, when a Manchester United vs. Bournemouth game actually was replayed after a security alert (a “dummy bomb”) caused an evacuation of Old Trafford. Clickbait sites have simply updated the dates to March 2026 to capitalize on the recent VAR anger.
THE VERDICT
There is NO REPLAY. The 2–2 draw is the final result. Manchester United will now head into the international break sitting in 3rd place, while Harry Maguire will serve a suspension for their next fixture.
