“We Can’t Succeed Without Him”: Bruno Fernandes Issues Desperate Transfer Plea to INEOS to Bring Back Former United Star
MANCHESTER — In an interview that has stunned the Old Trafford faithful, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has issued a bold ultimatum to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS board, claiming the club will “never succeed” next season unless they re-sign one specific former player who was offloaded during the Ruben Amorim era.
Despite United currently sitting 3rd in the Premier League under Michael Carrick, Fernandes believes the squad is missing a “vital piece of the puzzle” that was lost during Amorim’s turbulent 14-month reign. The captain’s comments suggest that while Champions League qualification is within reach, the current squad lacks the “mentality and profile” required to challenge for the title in 2027.
The “Scott McTominay” Factor?
While Fernandes didn’t name the player in the initial viral clip, all signs point toward Scott McTominay. The Scottish midfielder was sold to Napoli for £25m during Amorim’s squad overhaul—a move that many fans and teammates, including Bruno, reportedly disagreed with at the time.
Since moving to Italy, McTominay has transformed into a world-class “box-to-box” engine, netting 23 goals and becoming the cornerstone of Antonio Conte’s side. Fernandes, who shared a close bond with the academy graduate, reportedly feels that the “grit and goal-threat” McTominay provided is exactly what United’s midfield is missing.
“Champions League is Not Enough”
Speaking with raw honesty about the club’s future, Fernandes made it clear that simply qualifying for Europe’s elite competition isn’t the endgame.
“As the Captain, I know what we’re lacking at the moment,” Bruno revealed. “If he’s not back here with us, there’s no way we will succeed next season, even though we qualify for this Champions League. We need that specific profile back in the dressing room. He knows the badge, he knows the standards, and he was a mistake to let go.”
INEOS Face a £60m Dilemma
Bringing the “Ex-United Star” back won’t be cheap. Reports from Italy suggest that Napoli are unwilling to sell their new talisman for anything less than £60 million, especially with McTominay currently pushing for a Serie A title.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth now face a massive decision: do they swallow their pride and pay a premium to bring back a player sold under the previous manager, or do they stick to their “new age” recruitment policy and look elsewhere?
The Amorim “Exile” List
McTominay isn’t the only one. Fernandes’ comments have also sparked rumors about other “Amorim casualties,” including Rasmus Hojlund (currently on loan at Napoli) and Jadon Sancho. However, the captain’s emphasis on “success and mentality” strongly points toward the Scottish international who many believe was the “heartbeat” of the squad.
Should INEOS listen to Bruno and bring back McTominay, or is it time to move on from the past?
