The Butcher is Back: Lisandro Martínez Set for Post-International Break Return
Manchester United’s defensive crisis is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Following Michael Carrick’s latest injury update at Carrington, it has been confirmed that Lisandro Martínez is on the verge of a full return to the matchday squad.
While the Argentine “Warrior” will miss the Friday night clash against Bournemouth, Carrick has signaled that the upcoming international break is the final hurdle in his recovery.
“A Lot Closer”
Martínez has been sidelined since the 2-0 Manchester Derby win in January, where he suffered a recurring calf issue. His absence has forced Carrick to rely on the partnership of Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro, who have performed admirably during United’s 5-match winning streak.
However, Carrick made it clear that the World Cup winner is essential for the season’s “Final Push” toward a top-three finish.
“Lisandro Martínez is closer, a lot closer,” Carrick told reporters. “He’s getting there, so after this one [Bournemouth], I think he’ll be alright. He’s been training individually and we expect him to join the main group during the break.”
The “Defensive Spine” Reunited?
The timing of Licha’s return couldn’t be better. With Matthijs de Ligt still struggling with a “frustrating” back issue and Patrick Dorgu also sidelined, Martínez’s leadership and ball-playing ability from the back are exactly what United need for the final eight games.
United’s Projected Post-Break Defense:
LB: Luke Shaw / Diogo Dalot
CB: Lisandro Martínez (The Aggressor)
CB: Leny Yoro (The Protege)
RB: Noussair Mazraoui
The prospect of seeing Martínez pair up with Leny Yoro is particularly exciting for fans. Yoro recently credited Kobbie Mainoo for helping him settle, but many analysts believe Martínez’s “pitbull” mentality is the perfect tactical balance for Yoro’s calm, recovery-based style.
Targeting the Leeds Clash
If all goes to plan, Martínez will be in contention to start when United face Leeds United at Elland Road on April 13. With Bruno Fernandes breaking assist records and Benjamin Šeško firing upfront, a fully fit Martínez could be the “missing piece” that makes United truly “unstoppable,” as Pep Guardiola recently warned.
Welcome back, Licha. The Stretford End has missed the fire! 🇦🇷🔥
