The Man Utd Teammate Who Convinced Casemiro to Stay
It was supposed to be a long goodbye. In January, Casemiro officially announced he would leave Manchester United this summer when his contract expires. But after a string of world-class performances including his 8th goal of the season against Aston Villa the narrative has shifted.
Now, Casemiro has finally named the one teammate who has been “in his ear” every single day to change his mind: Matheus Cunha.
“Just One More Year”
While many suspected captain Bruno Fernandes or young star Kobbie Mainoo were the ones leading the charge, it is his fellow Brazilian, Matheus Cunha, who has been the most vocal.
Speaking after the win against Villa, Cunha admitted he has been relentless in his pursuit to keep “Case” in Manchester:
“I’m always asking him: ‘Come on, stay at Manchester United. Just one year with me… let’s go for the second little year!’ We are very close, he is always helping me. He’s reached a stage where he can decide where to play, and I hope it’s with us.”
The INEOS Dilemma
Despite the pleas from the dressing room and the “One More Year” chants from the Stretford End, a final decision hasn’t been reached.
The Performance: Casemiro has been undroppable under Carrick, forming a “steel and silk” partnership with Mainoo.
The Financial Reality: Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS team are still focused on reducing the club’s wage bill. Casemiro is currently on £350,000-a-week, and reports suggest a renewal would only happen if he accepts a “significant” pay cut.
Fabrizio Romano’s Update: As of today, Romano maintains that while United are “delighted” with his form, the official plan is still for him to leave but he admitted a “U-turn is possible” if the player and club can find common ground on wages.
Casemiro’s Heartfelt Admission
Casemiro himself has been moved by the support. “I know I already announced my departure,” he reportedly told teammates, “but thank God for the guys who make me feel so important here. It makes you think twice.”
