“Nowhere Near Enough”: Gary Neville Warns Manchester United of Champions League Struggle Without Four Key Signings
Manchester United may be riding high after their 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, but club legend Gary Neville has issued a sobering reality check. While the Red Devils are currently favorites to secure a third-place finish, Neville insists that qualifying for the Champions League is only half the battle.
Speaking on his latest Sky Sports podcast, Neville warned that the current squad is “nowhere near” the level required to compete on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Europe.
The Midfield “Problem”
Neville’s primary concern lies in the engine room. Despite the impressive form of Kobbie Mainoo and the veteran Casemiro under Michael Carrick, Neville believes the depth simply isn’t there for a grueling European campaign.
“It is more than likely they will qualify,” Neville stated. “But when they are playing in the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup, they are going to need three or four really good midfield players. At the moment, you’ve got Mainoo, but you can’t look at the others and think that is going to work for 60 games a season.”
The “Four Major Signings” Blueprint
With Casemiro confirmed to leave in June and Manuel Ugarte also tipped for a summer exit, Neville has outlined exactly where the board must invest to avoid a “struggle” next season.
A “Michael Carrick-Type” Playmaker: Neville insists United need a high-IQ, positional midfielder who can control the tempo of a game from deep—someone in the mold of the current interim boss.
The “Destroyer”: To balance the technical ability, Neville is calling for a physical, defensive-minded “enforcer” to protect the back four.
Left-Back Reinforcements: While Neville praised Luke Shaw’s quality, he questioned the defender’s “robustness” for a 55-game season. He urged the club to sign a high-level left-back to compete with and cover for Shaw.
A Long-Term Centre-Back: Although United have Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, their injury records remain a concern. Neville believes a reliable, top-tier centre-back is essential to ensure the defense doesn’t “break down” during mid-week European trips.
Squad Depth is the Ultimate Test
Neville pointed out that while United’s attack is finally “humming and purring” thanks to the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, the “engine room” remains a glaring issue.
“Every United fan in this stadium knows the current depth isn’t enough,” Neville concluded. “If they don’t get these four deals done this summer, they won’t have the squad to compete at a greater level. It’s not just about getting to the Champions League; it’s about staying there.”
