Rio Ferdinand SNUBS Bruno Guimarães: “Sign THIS Midfielder Instead!”
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has thrown a massive curveball into the club’s summer transfer plans. Speaking on the latest episode of his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the former defender urged INEOS to ignore the £100m hype surrounding Newcastle’s stars and focus on a “dynamic” alternative.
The “Wonderful” Choice: Elliot Anderson
While Manchester United have held meetings with the agents of Bruno Guimarães, Rio insists that Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is actually the player the team desperately needs.
“I think Elliot Anderson has jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a wonderful player. He’s the right type not only of player, but character that would be a good addition to the squad.”
Why Anderson Over Guimarães?
Rio’s reasoning comes down to “energy, power, and leadership.” He believes United have enough technical playmakers but lack a “warrior” in the engine room to protect Kobbie Mainoo.
The Verdict: “Tonali is a big talent, Guimarães is a big talent… but the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust and strong. Right now, Anderson is ticking all those boxes.”
The Competition: Rio warned that United must move fast, as Manchester City are also reportedly eyeing the 23-year-old as a potential long-term successor to Rodri or Bernardo Silva.
The £152m Midfield Rebuild
Rio didn’t stop there. He outlined a total four-player plan for United this summer:
Elliot Anderson: The “all-action” priority (Estimated £80m-£100m).
Kees Smit: The FC Twente sensation Rio calls a “must-watch” (£52m).
A Backup Striker: To support Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.
A Full-back: To provide competition for the injury-prone left-back slot.
Is Rio Right?
Anderson has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest this season, earning his first England caps and showing a level of physicality that United have missed since Casemiro’s form began to fluctuate. However, at a reported price tag of £80 million, many fans are asking if he is a “proven” enough upgrade over the established Bruno Guimarães.
