“Carrick Has Answered the Questions”: Rio Ferdinand Rips Into Critics and Backs “The Guy” for Permanent United Job
The debate over Manchester United’s next permanent manager is reaching a fever pitch, but for club legend Rio Ferdinand, the search should begin and end at Carrington. Following United’s statement 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, which saw them open up a three-point lead in the race for third, Rio took to his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast to mount a passionate defense of interim boss Michael Carrick.
With United having secured 22 points from a possible 27 since January, Rio believes the “interim” tag needs to be dropped immediately.
“Who Else Is More Qualified?”
Rio was quick to shut down names like Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto De Zerbi, who have both reportedly expressed interest in the role. For Rio, those managers come with “question marks” that Carrick has already erased on the pitch.
“Who else is out there that is THE GUY more qualified than Carrick?” Rio asked his co-hosts. “Everyone you mention still has question marks… Carrick has answered them. He’s gone and got six points against City and Arsenal right out of the gate. He’s put them in a structure that actually suits the players we have.”

Rio emphasized that the squad didn’t need a massive overhaul just a shift in leadership. “Are the players good enough? Yes. They just needed better coaching. They were stuck in a tactical straitjacket under Amorim, and Michael has freed them.”
The “Charisma” Myth
One of the most common criticisms leveled against Carrick is his perceived lack of “touchline charisma” compared to more animated managers. Rio, who shared a dressing room with Carrick for nearly a decade, dismissed this as “nonsense.”
“He’s always been like that… calm, same in wins and losses. People think you need to be jumping around like a madman to have an impact. Michael’s strength is his simplicity and his composure. The players respect that more than some theatrical performance on the sidelines.”
Partnerships and Stability
Rio pointed out that the “Carrick Revolution” is built on the return of traditional United values: stable partnerships. He highlighted the blossoming connections between Maguire and Martinez, Casemiro and Mainoo, and the record-breaking link-up play of Bruno Fernandes.
“We are starting to see partnerships all over the pitch again,” Rio noted. “That’s the United DNA. Michael knows this club better than anyone. He’s turned the collar up on his trench coat and said, ‘Follow me.’ And the boys are doing exactly that.”

As the INEOS board, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Omar Berrada, prepares to make a final decision this summer, Rio’s message was loud and clear: Stop looking elsewhere. The man for the job is already in the building.
