Former Premier League star Owen Hargreaves has heaped praise on Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko following the 1-1 draw against West Ham United at the London Stadium.
The Red Devils went into the league game on a four-match winning streak and were favourites to beat the Hammers. However, the east London outfit proved a tough opposition.
The Hammers took the lead through Tomas Soucek after some poor bit of defending by United. The Red Devils pushed for the equaliser and eventually grabbed one in the 96th minute.
A sublime finesse shot from Sesko secured a hard-fought point for Michael Carrick’s side.
Speaking after the game, Hargreaves said that it was a ‘proper’ finish by Sesko. The former Red Devils man added that the timing and feeling of the shot was ‘executed beautifully’.
He told Premier League Productions: “That is a proper finish. Usually players snatch at it or volley, but he did a little finesse one. That is the only thing he can do because the defender is right in front of him.
“If he smashes it, then Disasi blocks it. It just shows you how instinctive footballers are. The timing and the feeling of it was executed beautifully.”
United had several close moments against the Hammers last night. Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a brilliant clearance off the line, while Joshua Zirkzee was just inches away from equalising at 1-0.
Sesko eventually secured a point for the Red Devils. It was not the ideal result, but the draw ensures that United stay fourth in the league standings, ahead of Chelsea by a solitary point.
Sesko came on in the 69th minute. He did not complete a pass or a duel, but that does not matter. A striker’s prime job is to find the ball in the back of the net, and he did exactly so.
The 22-year-old also scored a late winner against Fulham at Old Trafford recently. He should have netted against Tottenham Hotspur too, but squandered a golden opportunity at the death.
Nevertheless, Sesko has shown that he has adapted to the demands of the Premier League. He deserves to make the starting XI when United face Everton on the road in 12 days’ time.
