INEOS could see bid accepted to sign £70m Matheus Cunha upgrade at Man Utd

Benjamin Sesko’s last-gasp flick at the London Stadium took Manchester United to 47 Premier League goals for the season, already eclipsing last year’s total of 44, with 12 games still to play.

This campaign – which will see United play just 40 games in total in all competitions – certainly hasn’t been plainsailing, although there is something there to get behind again, not least in the club’s new-look forward line.

The top two scorers at Old Trafford in 2025/26 are Bryan Mbeumo and Sesko on ten and seven apiece, while fellow new arrival Matheus Cunha sits in joint-third with six, alongside Bruno Fernandes.

There’s been so much to like about United’s new trio of late, although while INEOS can reflect on a job well done in the summer transfer window, that improved recruitment needs to be a sign of things to come moving forward.

Indeed, with the end of the campaign on the horizon, all eyes will soon be on potential new recruits arriving in the building, with attacking upgrades still up for grabs.

Man Utd could see bid accepted to sign £70m sensation

It’s been a relatively smooth ride for Michael Carrick in recent weeks, although the recent draw away to West Ham United showcased that there is still work to be done to turn this team into a truly competent and consistent outfit.

A key issue that was also exposed in east London was the lack of attacking depth at Carrick’s disposal on the bench, outside of the centre-forward pair of Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee, with the loss of Patrick Dorgu to injury leaving the Red Devils without a recognised left-winger.

The aforementioned Cunha and Mbeumo have both been deployed in that role of late, although the pair appear at their best centrally or on the right, respectively, ensuring the left flank must be a priority this summer.

With that in mind, CaughtOffside have reported that United and INEOS are now showing “serious” interest in AC Milan winger, Christian Pulisic, with rivals Arsenal also in the mix.

The report outlines that the former Chelsea man is keen on a return to the Premier League, having left Stamford Bridge in 2023, with his current side keen to oversee a ‘major squad overhaul’ this summer.

That desire to shake things up ensures that any suitor could see a bid accepted for the 27-year-old, with the Serie A outfit willing to listen to offers in the region of €80m (£70m) for the United States international.

Why Pulisic could be an upgrade on Cunha for Man Utd

In the post-Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo world, the flanks have been a consistent issue for United, with it hard to conjure up an image of too many transfer success stories in that department.

Indeed, the notable highlight was Marcus Rashford’s rise from homegrown talent into attacking sensation, albeit with the Englishman now out on loan at Barcelona, having seen the likes of Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho join him through the exit door over the summer.

Whether Pulisic could be the solution that the Red Devils have long been crying out for remains to be seen, although the ex-Blues star has certainly been a success in his current home, even after an injury-disrupted spell in England.

The one-time Borussia Dortmund wonderkid notably won the Champions League with the west Londoners, albeit while scoring just 26 goals in 145 games, alongside a further 21 assists.

Since moving to Milan, that record has swiftly been bettered, with the American – hailed as a “magician” of a winger by sports writer Al Butler – up to 42 goals and 25 assists in 121 games for the Italian giants.

In Serie A last season, for instance, he racked up 22 goals and assists, having recorded a further 21 goal involvements in the division the year prior.

For comparison, Cunha was just behind in 2024/25 after providing 21 goals and assists for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, after registering 19 the season before at Molineux.

As for the current campaign, Pulisic – who, like Cunha, can operate centrally or on either wing – has again bettered the £62.5m United man, registering eight goals and two assists in the league, ahead of the Brazilian’s return of six goals and two assists.

It is the Milan talisman who also comes out on top this season with regard to ‘big chances’ created and key passes made per game, highlighting his greater creative streak, with the £70m talent truly kicking on after a mixed time of things back in England’s capital.

At still only 27, moving for Pulisic could see INEOS land a player who is still yet to enter his peak years, while also boasting the benefit of prior Premier League experience.

Cunha, undoubtedly, has caught the eye amid a promising start to his Old Trafford career, although Pulisic’s record over a sustained period now suggests he might be an even bigger talent.
