When Mason Greenwood burst onto the scene at Manchester United as a 17-year-old, most fans were convinced they were watching a future world-class talent emerge.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed the versatile young forward completely, and Greenwood rewarded that faith handsomely, finding the net 35 times across 129 appearances in all competitions.
Everything changed in January 2022 when Greater Manchester Police arrested him. He faced serious charges including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
Those charges were ultimately withdrawn after key witnesses pulled out and “new evidence came to light”.
**Rebuilding his career abroad**
Manchester United still decided against welcoming him back into the squad, however, after facing a massive backlash from their fanbase.
This forced the young Englishman to restart his career overseas. He began with a loan at Getafe, where he shone brightly, scoring 10 goals and creating six more while being named their Player of the Year.
The 24-year-old then earned a permanent switch to Olympique Marseille, and he’s looked absolutely brilliant there, rediscovering the devastating form that once had Premier League fans raving about him.
This season alone, the England international has bagged 20 goals and added six assists, catching the eye of heavyweight clubs like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and surprisingly, even Liverpool.
**Explosive success in France**
Here’s where it gets interesting. Football Insider reports that when United sold Greenwood to Marseille, they cleverly inserted a buyback clause, and now club officials are seriously considering using it.
This clause would let the 20-time English champions bring him back for far less than what he’s worth now, even though recent reports suggest Marseille could fetch around €100 million if they sold him on the open market.
“Man United officials have been having internal conversations about bringing Mason Greenwood back to Old Trafford, Football Insider has learned from sources.
“When they sold the 24-year-old winger to Marseille in summer 2024, the Red Devils made sure to include a buyback option that would let them re-sign him for well below his current market value.”
**How will supporters respond?**
Nobody knows yet whether United actually wants to bring him back into the squad or if INEOS is simply looking to buy him back and flip him for pure profit.
Either way, fans will be glued to this story as it unfolds over the coming days.
