Steve Bruce says Ruben Amorim made three bold decisions at Man United to begin turnaround

Ruben Amorim has now been Manchester United head coach for an entire year and he has made sweeping changes behind the scenes.

After an underwhelming start to the season, Manchester United are beginning to build some momentum under Ruben Amorim with a four-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League.

Last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest marked the one-year anniversary of Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has publicly backed Amorim and the United fanbase remains firmly behind the Portuguese manager.

Turning things around at United was always going to be a monumental task, but Amorim has already made some ruthless decisions to get the ball rolling.

Ruben Amorim praised for clearing out Man United

Last season, Amorim heavily criticised Marcus Rashford and his work rate behind the scenes. It led to the Carrington graduate leaving to join Aston Villa and then Barcelona in the summer.

Given that Rashford was a fan favourite and a boyhood fan, it was a bold decision to make. In the summer, Amorim told five United players to train alone in what became known as the ‘bomb squad’.

A mass clear-out was necessary, and Amorim made it happen one way or another.

United legend Steve Bruce, speaking on talkSPORT, praised Amorim for being brave and offloading three players in particular.

“To be fair to him, he [Amorim] has made some big calls,” Bruce said.

“A bit like Arteta. I mean, the Rashford situation, the Garnacho situation and Antony. He’s made a big call and got the ones he wants to get in.

“There are signs of recovery. We all want him to do well.

“I think everybody likes him. I think he’s a really genuine guy. He’s obviously got strong beliefs because the whole football world was craving for him to change, but he stuck with it.”

Ruben Amorim has upgraded Man United squad

In what was his first summer transfer window as head coach, Amorim can be delighted at the signings added to his squad.

United overhauled their attacking department, with Rasmus Hojlund leaving alongside Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. To replace them, Ineos brought in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
