Luke Shaw could be on the verge of making his sensational return to the England national team after a solid run of form for Manchester United this season.
The 30-year-old Manchester United defender had been a key left-back choice for Sir Gareth Southgate when the ex-England boss was at the helm of the national side.
Luke Shaw featured for England in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Three Lions at the Olympiastadion Berlin in Germany.
Sir Gareth Southgate stepped down after the defeat to Spain and former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel succeeded him as England head coach in 2025.
Thomas Tuchel has hinted that Shaw could earn his place back in the England national team ahead of the Three Lions’ 2026 World Cup campaign next summer.
Luke Shaw’s Man Utd performances are putting him in a strong position for England boss Thomas Tuchel not to overlook him
The aftermath of Euro 2024 saw Luke Shaw once again be hit by injuries in his career, which disrupted the England international’s 2024-25 Premier League season.
Shaw was reduced to only seven Premier League appearances in the previous campaign, as well as featuring five times for United in the Europa League final run.
However, the ex-Southampton star has appeared to overcome his injury-hit spell at Old Trafford with his run of appearances in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
Shaw has already eclipsed last campaign’s Premier League appearance tally, with the United star starting all 10 of the Red Devils’ league matches this season.
Ruben Amorim has relied on Shaw to play as the left-sided centre-back in his tactical system after a long-term injury setback for Lisandro Martinez last season.
Shaw has flown under the radar at times this season with his performances for United, with the left-back adapting to the central position for Ruben Amorim.
United manager Amorim has also called for Shaw to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming November international break.
Erik ten Hag’s words could remind Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim of Luke Shaw’s biggest strength
Erik ten Hag had thrown his entire backing behind Shaw before he was sacked as United manager after he dropped the ultimate compliment on his best position.
“Luke Shaw is the best left-back in the world,” he told Dutch outlet Vi.NL in 2024.
“This guy is so good. But he has suffered a horrible injury at the start of his career and because of this he will never be able to play 60 games per season.”
Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United might have axed the left-back role, but the Red Devils’ left-sided wing-back has looked weak with Diogo Dalot there.
Diogo Dalot has played as an inverted full-back for the Red Devils this season and there has been much left to be desired for United fans about the left flank.
Thomas Tuchel calling up Shaw and using him at left-back for England might allow Erik ten Hag’s words to remind Amorim what the player can do on the left flank.
