Where Manchester United stand on deal to sign breakout star in January after ‘concrete negotiations’ held

Man Utd have been linked with a move to sign the teenage striker in the January transfer window.

Manchester United have no plans to move for AIK Fotboll striker Kevin Filling in the January transfer window.

A recent report claimed United were in ‘concrete negotiations’ to sign the 16-year-old early next year for a fee of roughly €3 million (£2.6m). However, it is understood this is not true and that United’s interest is simply being exaggerated as a negotiation tactic.

Even if United wanted to sign the teenage forward, they would not be allowed to until he turns 18 in November 2026 due to post-Brexit rules. The current regulations state Premier League and EFL clubs can’t sign players from abroad until they turn 18, while all transfers from European nations require a work permit.

It is for those same reasons United were only able to sign Paraguayan defender Diego Leon when he turned 18 earlier this year, while they won’t be able to welcome Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco to the club until he celebrates his birthday next summer. United could still reach a pre-transfer agreement with Filling if they wished, but would have to wait the best part of a year for him to be allowed to transfer to the club.

United are always on the lookout to sign the best young talent available, with Jim Ratcliffe eager for the club to produce the next crop of world-class talent, rather than simply buy them when they are already established. There has been a noticeable change in the transfer approach to sign exciting prospects as early as possible, in the hope they will save huge amounts of money in the future.

The club are also well accustomed to being linked with several transfers that they don’t actually hold serious interest in. Filling has three goals in 10 appearances for the AIK first-team this season and it would not be a surprise if the links with United resulted in either an improved contract or generate interest from elsewhere in his potential transfer.

It is understood Filling has interest from a host of Bundesliga clubs, while Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with a future transfer for the teenager. It would not be a surprise if he moved to Germany, given that the initial claim came from a German reporter.
