The two ‘stunning’ £90m players who could turn Man United into top-four contenders in January

Man United spent over £170m in the summer transfer window, and they are expected to spend more in January.

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side are just four points off the top four places, despite having a poor start to the season, as their recent form has been better. They have won two of their last three matches, including their last game before the international break, which was a 2-0 win against Sunderland.

It is vital for the development of the club under Amorim that the Red Devils secure European football this season, with the Champions League being the priority due to the amount of money that it generates for the club.

United haven’t been in the Champions League since the 2023/24 season under Erik Ten Hag, when they finished bottom of their group with just one win in six games. However, Amorim will need to improve his squad to boost his chances of Champions League qualification. But who could they sign to help?

If United want to make the top four come the end of the season, they need to add a holding midfielder, as the spot alongside Bruno Fernandes has been cursed with mediocre play since the start of the season. United have been linked with Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Jobe Bellingham and more.

However, Wharton should be the man to come to Old Trafford in January, as he has been in stunning form this season for Crystal Palace. He is a physical midfielder who is also excellent on the ball and can help create chances from a deeper position.

The England international is expected to cost over £60m in January, which is a hefty investment for United, but he could be one of the key players who could propel this United side from just a top-half finish to the Champions League, which would help to recoup that fee.

Dumfries would help United finish in the top four

The second player that United should look to sign in January is Inter Milan right-wing back Denzel Dumfries, who has been linked to both United and rivals Manchester City. His current contract at Inter isn’t due to expire until June 2028; however, reports have said he could leave the Italian club this summer.

As things stand, Amorim has been playing either Diogo Dalot or Amad Diallo in the right-wing back role, but neither of them is a natural wing-back. Dalot is more of a defensive full-back, whereas Diallo is more of an attacking winger.

If United were to add a proper wing-back such as Dumfries, he could add the balance of defensive stability and attacking prowess. Many would consider the Dutch international to be one of, if not the best, wing-backs in the world, and so he could help transform this United team and give them something they don’t currently have on the right-hand side.

His current market value is estimated to be around the £30m mark due to his age of 29, but it would be an investment worth making for Amorim and United moving forward.

In other news, Man United can only sign £26m ‘unsettled’ star who could be ready to join if they allow controversial exit.
