Sky Sports journalist shares ‘positive’ news he’s hearing out of Carrington, fans will be delighted

Lisandro Martinez is closing in on his long-awaited return to action after being sidelined since the start of February.

On February 2, in a 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace, the Manchester United star was stretchered off with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, confirming he’d be ruled out for a lengthy period.

Lisandro Martinez can’t catch a break with injury layoffs

It marked yet another setback for Martinez, who has yet to oversee an injury-free season since he signed for the club in 2022.

Despite spending the last three years of his career at Old Trafford, he has accumulated only 91 appearances across all competitions, whilst missing a whopping 79 games – 56 of which came in the Premier League.

Alas, there will be hopes among the Red Devils coaching staff that Martinez will be able to keep himself fit for the remainder of the term (and beyond) when he officially makes his comeback to the squad.

The fact that the side are playing considerably fewer games in the absence of European football may actually aid the Argentine’s quest to avoid any further setbacks.

It’s thought Ruben Amorim will take precaution when it comes to reintegrating Martinez into first-team action, but there have been some encouraging developments coming out of Carrington this week.

Martinez returns ‘positive’ knee scan

According to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, the 27-year-old underwent a scan on his knee eight months after suffering the tear, which returned as ‘positive’.

This has led to ‘optimism’ that he can rejoin his teammates in their session in the coming days, albeit he won’t be named in a matchday squad just yet.

Other reports have suggested Martinez is likely to be back in the fold and ready to make his mark after the November international break.

Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui, who hasn’t featured since the win over Chelsea on September 20, may be available for Sunday’s trip to Anfield.
