Ruben Amorim’s approach with Mason Mount is being mirrored after he shared his insight into one influential first-team Manchester United star at Old Trafford.
Mason Mount has impressed with Manchester United this season after the former Chelsea star has overcome a rough period in his Old Trafford spell due to injuries.
The 26-year-old has been a key pick for Ruben Amorim in the attacking set-up, with Mount able to play as a false nine or in one of the two No 10 roles in the system.
Mount could be called up for England in the near future after bouncing back from his period on the sidelines, which has haunted him since his 2023 move from Chelsea.
The United No 7 has made eight appearances across all competitions this season and Mount has netted once and registered an assist for the Premier League club.
United manager Amorim might use Mount as the perfect template for how he handles one other first-team Red Devils star in the short term at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim’s update on Lisandro Martinez is a sign that the Mason Mount blueprint might need to be repeated
Lisandro Martinez, much like Mason Mount, has been held back from unleashing his full potential due to injury setbacks, with the Manchester United star sidelined.
The 27-year-old Argentine centre-back missed the second half of the Red Devils’ 2024-25 campaign after his ankle injury in United’s defeat to Crystal Palace.
Following United’s loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford in February, Martinez underwent surgery on his knee and has since been recovering.
Ruben Amorim provided an update on Martinez during his pre-match press conference ahead of the Red Devils’ encounter with Nottingham Forest.
United on Thursday confirmed that Martinez had also returned to first-team training at the Carrington training complex for the first time since his knee injury.
Speaking to Manchester United’s club media in a separate interview, Amorim said: “Licha is not ready yet.
“He wants to be and if you see him training, you say that you can understand that he’s ready, but he needs more time.
“We need to be careful with him.”
What Ruben Amorim said about Lisandro Martinez is a textbook angle for taking the Mason Mount approach
Ruben Amorim’s remarks about Lisandro Martinez, a linchpin defensive figure in his set-up, shows that the United head coach is being methodical with his approach.
Mount’s sudden burst of form and consistency did not happen overnight, but it only manifested through a careful management of the former Chelsea star’s injuries.
Amorim is a big admirer of Mount and the 40-year-old Portuguese coach is all too familiar with the versatility of the former England international in his system.
But the former Sporting CP boss was precise with his management of Mount’s injury-hit 2024-25 season, putting him on for a burst of minutes in cameo appearances.
“We need players like Mason Mount,” Amorim said last season, as per The Daily Mail in March.
“I think he will be on the bench [vs Leicester City], we will see. We need him and every player.
“If he is fit, I will take him. He cannot play too many minutes, but just five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.”
Amorim is showing conviction with his decisions and a repeat of the ‘Mount blueprint’ could see Martinez have the same run of success in form when he does return.
