Peter Schmeichel can’t understand why Ballon d’Or nominee doesn’t play for Man United

Peter Schmeichel is shocked that Manchester United sold a player he believes is perfect for the club.

Manchester United have been grappling with Financial Fair Play restrictions for the past couple of years but look to have finally secured some breathing space after making brutal cuts around the club.

Cost-slashing measures implemented by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe resulted in hundreds of staff redundancies, while players were also cleared out to avoid any costly breaches.

However, Peter Schmeichel strongly disagrees with the decision to offload someone who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year after a stunning purple patch for his new side.

Peter Schmeichel says United should have kept Rasmus Hojlund

Scott McTominay has been a revelation for Napoli since joining from United in August 2024.

The midfielder was sold for a meagre fee of around £25million, and has gone on to score 14 goals and register seven assists in his 44 appearances in Naples.

McTominay admitted his departure from Old Trafford was partly influenced by FFP but held no regrets, insisting he had to “look out for number one”.

Schmeichel, however, has insisted his former club made a major mistake in letting both the Scot and striker Rasmus Hojlund go.

“This is a Scottish podcast, the best example is Scott McTominay. He is so much Manchester United,” Schmeichel told the Sacked in the Morning podcast.

“A manager comes in, he knows he’s got anything. United are probably two years and a bit to prove himself. And then you look at him, he’s not that kind of player who’s going to score or create that goal.

“They don’t trust him to be the one they’re building the team around. They want the good, neat players, and he’s just been the victim of that time and time again. I just don’t get what he’s doing at Napoli.

“They are Manchester United players. You will get no one with more enthusiasm for Manchester United than Rasmus Hojlund. He was writing about being a Manchester United player when he was 10 years old.”

Scott McTominay on Man United departure

McTominay is already idolised by Napoli supporters and deservedly found himself in the running for the Ballon d’Or after his heroics in Italy. He ultimately finished in a respectable 18th place.

The 28-year-old stepped up his performances under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag at United, but he was eager to take up a new challenge in Italy.

“It was a big decision, but in some ways it was quite straightforward,” he told BBC Scotland.

“I saw the passionate fans, I saw the coach, I saw the players and I saw an opportunity.

“I took it. I didn’t look back. It didn’t take me long to make the decision because I knew that was what I wanted and I’ll never have any regrets in my life.

“As soon as I put my mind to something I want to do it, that’s it. There’s no holding me back.”
