Manchester United’s recruitment has changed in recent years, but the level of scrutiny of each player remains the same, as the latest signings are learning this season.
Manchester United made five signings in the summer as Ruben Amorim looked to improve his team ahead of the 2025/26 season.
A poor start to the campaign has raised further question marks over Amorim, with some sections of the media going after new signings before they’ve had time to settle.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given Amorim his full backing during the international break, which provides everyone with a sense of clarity, allowing the team to focus on turning things around in the future.
Among the new signings is Benjamin Sesko, who took seven games to score his first goal for the club. The 22-year-old has since scored in back-to-back games and will hope to continue his run of goals when United travel to Liverpool this weekend.
A big result over Liverpool would not only lift some of the pressure off Amorim, but it would also present an opportunity for one of the new signings to make a name for themselves.
Paul Scholes questions Benjamin Sesko signing
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has questioned whether any common sense was used by United when signing Sesko from RB Leipzig in the summer.
The Slovenia international was brought in to score goals after Rasmus Hojlund came up short in his first two seasons at Old Trafford with just 26 goals.
There is no denying that Sesko is showing signs of improvement, but Scholes has questioned the thought process behind the transfer, with United sending Hojlund to Napoli on loan
“The centre forward for Man United is a great example. You look at Rasmus Hojlund, a 22-year-old kid,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
“He came when he was probably 20 years of age. Centre forward for Manchester United and everything was on him. The pressure was on him.
“He should be coming in and out of the team. He should be one of three or four centre forwards. So this summer what did they do? they let him go and they buy another one who’s very, very similar.
“Exactly the same 22 years of age. And the pressure on him, he started okay, I said, he looks like he’s getting a little bit better. But where’s the common sense in that?”
This comparison to Hojlund will be put to bed if Sesko can continue scoring goals for United, but it won’t change the fact that the squad is light on striker options.
Amorim could also look to Joshua Zirkzee as an alternative option, but it’s an area United will need more depth in over the coming years.
Benjamin Sesko can do something Rasmus Hojlund couldn’t
During his time at United, Hojlund played against Liverpool on four occasions.
United were only victorious once – in the 2024 FA Cup quarter-final – but Hojlund never managed to register a goal or assist against the Merseyside club.

Sesko, who has played against Liverpool on one occasion in the Champions League, will be aiming to make it three goals in as many games for United.
Liverpool go into the match after failing to win their last three games across all competitions.
