Man Utd won’t sign 600-goal veteran who ‘said yes’ to Old Trafford move due to Ruben Amorim’s change of heart

Man United have been linked to signing a 37-year-old striker who could become a free agent.

Ruben Amorim is certainly regarded in a better light than a month ago at Manchester United as he has guided his side to winning two games in a row, with the most recent being a stunning 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Much of United’s improvement has been down to their summer transfer business, as they added some key attacking talents in the form of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. The latter has scored two goals in his last three games for the Red Devils.

Sesko joined for a fee of £74m, and he is beginning to show that he has the potential to justify the fee. However, reports have said that Man United have been linked to signing a veteran striker as a free agent to challenge the 22-year-old.

Man United linked to signing Lewandowski

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski’s contract at the La Liga club is set to expire at the end of the season, after a four-year spell with the club. The Spanish giants do have an option to extend his contract by one year, but if they opt against that, English clubs could make a pre-contract agreement with him in the January transfer window to join in the summer.

According to the Daily Star, Man United are one club that could make a move to sign the Poland international, with suggestions that he could challenge Sesko, but also mentor the 22-year-old moving forward.

Lewandowski was previously linked with a move to Old Trafford when Sir Alex Ferguson was manager in 2012; however, he ended up moving to Bayern Munich instead. At the time, the striker said yes to a move. He told BBC Sport earlier this year: “To Manchester United I decided and said yes. I wanted to join Manchester United to see Alex Ferguson.”

The 37-year-old has scored 614 career goals in 832 appearances and is undoubtedly one of the best strikers of his era.

Man United won’t sign Lewandowski

Despite the links, it is unlikely that United will sign the 37-year-old, as the transfer strategy is no longer signing older players who are ‘coming down’ in their career. One recent example was Casemiro, and it is fair to say that he hasn’t justified the £70m price tag that United paid for him.

Under Ruben Amorim, the transfer strategy has been different, United are signing proven Premier League players who they know will be able to deliver, rather than taking riskier moves on unproven players, or big-money veterans.

So far, it seems to have paid off, with both Mbeumo and Cunha impressing. Looking ahead to January too, United have been linked to adding a holding midfielder, which will likely be one of Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, or Elliot Anderson, all of whom are proven in the Premier League, but also young talents.

They fit the mould of the sort of players that United are adding under Amorim, Lewandowski doesn’t.
