Manchester United face Liverpool at Anfield this coming weekend, now the international break is over.
With no wins at Anfield since 2016, Ruben Amorim faces a major challenge to lead his Manchester United side to victory away at Liverpool.
In his favour, Liverpool have lost three games in succession in all competitions, and Amorim’s side secured a 2-2 draw at Anfield.
It was a big improvement on the horrific 7-0 loss at Anfield two seasons earlier, that former boss Erik ten Hag never really recovered from.
For one player, this coming weekend presents his first chance at redemption since that nightmare defeat.
Casemiro set for Anfield return
Casemiro was one of Manchester United’s starters in the diabolical defeat to Liverpool under Erik ten Hag. He actually had a bright first half before fading horribly with the rest of the team, and was substituted at 5-0 down.
United have played at Anfield twice since, drawing 0-0 and 2-2, and Casemiro did not play a single minute in either.
Casemiro missed the 0-0 draw in December 2023 after suffering an injury. United started Scott McTominay, Fred and Sofyan Amrabat in a three-man midfield that helped to stifle the hosts.
In the January 2025 encounter, Casemiro was simply out of favour under Ruben Amorim.
The Brazilian was an unused substitute, with Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte selected in midfield. Bruno Fernandes later dropped deep after Joshua Zirkzee replaced Mainoo.
Casemiro has gone on to regain Ruben Amorim’s trust, and he has started five of Manchester United’s seven games this season in the Premier League.
There is a strong chance Casemiro will be one of United’s midfield starters at Anfield, making his first appearance since the loss.
