Manchester United man Amad Diallo played a key role for Ivory Coast on Tuesday night as the African nation sealed their spot at next summer’s World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Kenya.
Franck Kessie opened the scoring after just seven minutes with Diallo providing the assist to put Ivory Coast on course for the win they needed. The United man found his teammate with an incisive pass into the 18-yard box and the midfielder took a touch and hammered home.
Yan Diomande added a second goal shortly after half time and the win was wrapped up by Diallo on 84 minutes. Diallo’s goal was a beautiful free-kick from the edge of the penalty area that he whipped into the far corner with his left foot.
Altay Bayindir benched as Turkey hammer Georgia 4-1
Elsewhere, United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was benched as Turkey beat Georgia 4-1 in their latest World Cup qualifier. The result all-but seals a play-off spot for Turkey who are now six points ahead of Georgia with two games remaining. They also have a goal difference that is better and play Bulgaria at home in their next game.
They have yet to pick up a point in any of their qualifying games and Turkey only need a point to seal second spot. They can still top the group but would realistically need Spain to drop points against Georgia in their next outing.
Turkey then play Spain away from home in their final qualifier and would need to win that game to beat the 2010 World Cup winners to the top of the group. Spain’s goal difference is far superior so even finishing level on points would not be sufficient.
Elsewhere, Casemiro and Matheus Cunha were both involved as Brazil lost 3-2 to Japan in a friendly. Brazil went 2-0 up with both of their goals coming in the first half. However, Japan responded with three unanswered goals in 19 second-half minutes to seal victory.
Casemiro played the full game while Cunha came off the bench.
United youngster Diego Leon came off the bench as Paraguay lost 2-0 to South Korea in a friendly.
Bruno Fernandes was also in action as Portugal were held to a 2-2 draw by Hungary. The visitors went 1-0 up before two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal ahead. Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai rescued a point for Hungary with a 91st minute equalsier.
Fernandes was not on the pitch at that point as he had been withdrawn after 62 minutes.
