Manchester United were brilliant in victory against Liverpool, however, the performance raised further doubts around one position.
The display which earned Manchester United a 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday was excellent, with the team stepping up in the biggest fixture of the season.
There were some really impressive United performers at Anfield, but there were also some clear signs as to where Ruben Amorim needs upgrades to reach the next level.
Midfield is a clear area of focus for 2026, with United already eyeing Adam Wharton and also Carlos Baleba. However, there is another position which is quickly becoming the top priority.
Manchester United need a new starting left wing-back in 2026
Against Liverpool, there was plenty to be pleased with, but one glaring weakness was clear, that being the disparity in quality between Amad at right wing-back and both Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu on the left.
Amad at wing-back brings a deadly dynamic to the right side, making that the side of the pitch United look much better.
Amorim has stated that Amad is perfect for the system, which makes it seem like an obvious move for United to find a similar player for the left side.
As Amad shone for United against Liverpool, Dalot was disappointing as he often can be and then Dorgu wasn’t much better, being inconsistent at his youthful age.
United need a player with the ability to create and beat defenders like Amad, but on the left and 2026 therefore has a new priority for Ineos to strengthen.
Potential new left wing-backs for Ruben Amorim
With signing a new left wing-back, United will need someone with the work rate of Amad, along with the attacking output to offer more at this stage than a developing Dorgu.
The obvious addition would be United signing Antoine Semenyo, with the Bournemouth star quickly becoming one of the league’s best players and has qualities perfect for this role in Amorim’s team, being the archetype of what Dorgu could become in the coming years.
Beyond Semenyo, no clear options stand out which makes it imperative that the Ghanaian international is targeted with the utmost priority.
Having Semenyo and Matheus Cunha as the left sided attacking threat would be among the best pairings in the league, right up there with Amad and Bryan Mbeumo.
