Manchester United and manager Ruben Amorim maintain their trust in Manuel Ugarte, despite his inconsistent performances at Old Trafford, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed, writing in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
Ugarte made the move to United back in August 2024, joining the club from Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain for a significant fee. Since his arrival, the Uruguayan midfielder has struggled to perform as consistently as he did previously, and he’s come under plenty of criticism since joining the Red Devils.
Amorim coached Ugarte during his time at Sporting CP, so there’s no doubt he played a key role in bringing him to Old Trafford back in 2024. This season, Ugarte has started twice in the Premier League, playing 243 minutes for United. Amorim hasn’t quite found his ideal pairing in the middle of the park, with Ugarte failng to nail down a guaranteed starting spot in the side this term.
Fabrizio Romano: Ugarte Update at Man Utd
Writing in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter, Romano has confirmed that although Ugarte’s performances ‘haven’t always been excellent’, the Uruguayan midfielder still has the trust from both Amorim and the club. The respected reporter has claimed that all parties are hoping for improvement soon.
“Of course performances haven’t been always excellent, but coach and club maintain their trust in Ugarte. They hope for improvement soon.”
Ugarte has had his difficulties since joining United, but it often takes players coming from abroad time to settle in and adapt to the Premier League. The Red Devils have been linked with a host of different midfielders over the last few months, so it will be interesting to see how regular Ugarte is in Amorim’s side if they do bring in reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Reports have claimed that Manchester United are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton ahead of 2026, but the Eagles are hoping to tie him down to a new deal. GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano also reported in the summer transfer window that United had an interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, but the Seagulls insisted that he wasn’t for sale. It will be interesting to see if anything changes in January in terms of their interest in a new midfielder, or even next summer with the winter market being notoriously difficult.
