Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United identify ‘perfect signing’ after ‘very positive exchanges’ over move

The latest Man Utd transfer news and gossip as they target a midfield overhaul next year.

Manchester United are expected to be in the market for at least two central midfield signings next year as they look to bolster their options under Ruben Amorim.

United sources insisted the position was never a ‘priority’ this year, though that didn’t stop them from making enquiries over several possible options in the final weeks of the summer window. In the end, United did not sign a midfielder and instead focused on overhauling their attack.

There is already a desire to add another midfielder to their current options, while that need could increase if they end up in European competition next season. Casemiro is expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season, Kobbie Mainoo is unhappy with his lack of playing time, Bruno Fernandes is still a target for Saudi clubs and Manuel Ugarte has struggled since he moved to Manchester last year.

Carlos Baleba viewed as ‘perfect’ midfield addition

Manchester United are planning for one of their midfield signings to be a major deal and it will likely be the biggest move they make next summer. Brighton ace Carlos Baleba was viewed as the ‘perfect’ option this year, while Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest favourite Elliot Anderson are also on their radar.

Ruben Amorim would prefer to sign a player with Premier League experience and a move for Baleba could be back on the cards at the end of the season. Speaking in his latest YouTube video, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano provided an update on their interest in the 21-year-old.

“Carlos Baleba was a target for Manchester United,” he told viewers. “There were very positive exchanges between, Baleba, his agent and Manchester United. He wanted the move, but he didn’t want to force the move. He respected Brighton, he didn’t ask to go, so it was in Brighton’s hands.

“At the moment, Brighton insist on their position not to sell the player in the January transfer window. For that to happen, it would have to be a crazy proposal or if the player asked to go. Even in that case, they don’t want to sell him. It is going to be difficult.

“In the summer, it might be different. Amorim pushed a lot for Baleba in the summer transfer window, he saw him as a perfect target for Man United, in terms of intensity, skills, potential and knowledge of the Premier League. He was considered a perfect signing by people at the club and by the manager.

“It remains a difficult deal for January, for the summer we will see what will happen. Manchester United are looking for an important midfielder in 2026.”
