Fabrizio Romano: Man United ‘hold meetings’ as talks ‘continue’ to sign Anfield hero on new deal

Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on a potential new deal for a Man United star before January.
Manchester United are riding the wave of a huge victory at Anfield over the weekend. The Red Devils won 2-1 against Liverpool, who have now lost four games in a row. It was the first time United had won at Anfield since January 2016, when Wayne Rooney scored the winning goal.

Bryan Mbeumo scored the opener just two minutes into the game, before Cody Gakpo was able to equalise for Liverpool in the second half amid a barrage of pressure from the Reds. But, afterwards, Harry Maguire scored the winning goal in the 84th minute to hand United their second win in a row for the first time under Amorim.

Maguire has scored several last-minute goals for United during his tenure, but this one may be considered one of his best and most memorable, one that the United fans will treasure for years to come.

Fabrizio Romano says Man United are in talks with Maguire

Maguire’s current contract at Old Trafford is expected to expire at the end of the season, after they triggered a one-year extension last term. However, it is understood that United want to keep the 32-year-old, and that the English defender wants to stay at United too.

Fabrizio Romano has said that the Red Devils are in talks to sign Maguire on a new contract before January, when clubs abroad can begin talks of a pre-contract agreement with the 32-year-old.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Two meetings already took place, one of them at Carrington. Talks will continue, but the salary is going to be an important part of the conversation, but I can guarantee you that Harry Maguire is really, really open to staying at Manchester United.”

Maguire is currently on a wage of £190,000 per week, and it is understood that he is willing to take a pay cut, as United would like, to sign an extension and remain at Old Trafford moving forward.

What has Maguire said about his future at Man United?

The defender hasn’t publicly said that he wants to stay at the club, but in the summer, he hinted that he had always hoped to extend his contract at Man United despite his current deal’s expiry date of June 2026.

Speaking to the Guardian in the summer, Maguire said: “I’m sure over the next few months we’ll have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend. I have something in my mind about what I want to do. I don’t want to put it out there [publicly], but it’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could.”

Previous reports have said that Saudi Pro League clubs are interested in the 32-year-old, although it hasn’t been said whether he would be open to moving to Saudi Arabia. Premier League clubs would also likely be on the radar, with the likes of West Ham previously linked to the defender.
