Ed Woodward sold £2m mansion to ex-Liverpool star amid Man Utd fan unrest

Ed Woodward sold his luxury mansion to a former Liverpool striker at a reduced rate after Manchester United protests.

It is no secret that Ed Woodward was an unpopular figure among Manchester United fans, often seen as a Glazer scrooge in the multiple roles he held, including chief executive following the exit of David Gill.

United fans have been protesting against the Glazer family ever since Malcolm Glazer expressed an interest in buying the club. That counts for over 20 years of protesting, with fan group The 1958 still raising questions about the club’s ownership.

While the Glazers remain majority owners of the club, Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a co-owner at the beginning of 2024 as Ineos took control of football operations.

Woodward announced his departure in 2022, two years before Ratcliffe’s arrival, but some of the decisions he made were responsible for hindering the team’s progress on the pitch.

Ex-Liverpool striker Fabio Borini bought Ed Woodward’s house at a reduced rate

Fabio Borini played for Liverpool, Chelsea and AC Milan, but the 34-year-old currently finds himself at Salford City.

The Italian striker left Sampdoria in the summer and had been training with Salford City before they offered him a deal earlier this month.

Borini already had somewhere to live near Salford City before he joined the club, after buying Woodward’s mansion in Cheshire.

A report from The Sun in 2020 claims 20 hooded United fans targeted Woodward’s £2 million mansion with red paint, a smoke bomb and a firework, which Borini claims helped him secure the house at a reduced rate.

Speaking to The Times, Borini revealed: “We bought the house four years ago, actually from the former CEO of Man United, Woodward. Because of the protests outside, everybody was worried, so I said, ‘Don’t worry I’ll buy it, get the price down!’”

Since leaving United, Woodward has acted as an advisor in the sports and technology industry, working with AI firms and Esports companies.

Fabio Borini stats vs Man Utd

Borini took on United nine times throughout his career with three different clubs (Chelsea, Liverpool and Sunderland).

The Italy international won three games against United, losing five and drawing one.

He got on the scoresheet twice, including one for Sunderland in a 2-1 win that gave the Black Cats an advantage going into an FA Cup semi-final second leg tie.

Borini is currently trying to become a force in League Two with Salford City, a club owned by David Beckham and Gary Neville.
