What Man Utd star did in summer that left Amorim ‘unhappy’ – before requesting to INEOS that he be offloaded

Tomorrow, Andre Onana will undergo his medical with Trabzonspor before putting pen to paper on a season-long deal.

The goalkeeper for Manchester United has now been excluded from Ruben Amorim’s plans for the upcoming season, with his poor performance during the match against Grimsby Town last month considered the ‘final straw’ by the key decision-makers, according to Mail Sport.

Onana allowed two goals at Blundell Park, enduring a difficult match in regular time before witnessing the League Two opponents successfully convert 12 penalties against him, thus concluding United’s Carabao Cup journey in the second round.

Why Ruben Amorim decided enough was enough with Andre Onana

Such a disheartening performance led Amorim to advocate for a new goalkeeper in the closing days of the transfer window. On the final day, the club announced the acquisition of 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

The defeat against Grimsby was merely the latest setback in Onana’s tumultuous career at United. Earlier in the summer, when players returned to Carrington for pre-season training, the Cameroonian suffered a hamstring injury on only his second day back at the facility.

Amorim was reported to be ‘dissatisfied’ with the circumstances, as video evidence from Onana’s return trip to Cameroon depicted him playing ‘outfield on a muddy makeshift pitch’.

Nevertheless, he was approaching the 2025/2026 season with complete confidence that he would remain the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford – which is why he felt ‘concerned’ when he was left out of the initial Premier League matches of the season against Arsenal and Fulham.

INEOS backed Amorim’s plea to offload Onana

Following the League Cup setback, the board recommended that Onana explore other possibilities, although these would be restricted due to the European transfer window closing on September 1.

Turkish clubs, along with those in Saudi Arabia, can conduct transactions until September 12 and September 10, respectively – which explains his prompt agreement with Trabzonspor.

Amorim’s choice to advocate for the £47 million transfer of the player was approved by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox, although they will be responsible for facilitating his sale next year, as there is neither a buy option nor an obligation included in the agreement.
