In recent years, Manchester United’s goalie dilemma has made the Theatre of Dreams a nightmare for supporters.
Andre Onana, who had played a key role in Inter Milan’s Champions League final the season before, was brought in by the Red Devils to fill the position in the summer of 2023.
The Cameroonian hasn’t done much to ease those anxieties after two years and several mistakes.
At the beginning of the 2025–26 season, Altay Bayindir replaced the 29-year-old, but the Turkish goalkeeper is hardly an improvement.
By the end of this summer, Ruben Amorim had seen enough to sanction a move for Senne Lammens. The Belgum U-21 international arrived at Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp for a reported £18m fee on transfer deadline Day.
Lammens is seen as a long-term solution to United’s goalkeeping woes
Lammens was brought in to take Andre Onana’s post permanently. Given that the Manchester Derby is coming up following the international break, it is thought that the Belgian will be eased into action.
But against Pep Guardiola’s team, United should take a chance and start with “Baby Courtois.”
Onana and Bayindir have had a difficult season, and their bad play will probably make them less confident in such a crucial match.
Lammens, on the other hand, will be keen to make an impression but will not bring any baggage to the game.
The new signing could even be the element of surprise against City, who will definitely be planning to take advantage of United’s goalkeeping woes. There’s a possibility that Guardiola’s side would not have done their homework on the Belgian, which could work to Amorim’s advantage.
A tremendous shot stopper
Known for his ability to stop shots, Lammens apparently attracted United’s attention during scouting. He is skilled at saving penalties and has good technique.
The player’s 1.93-meter frame also helps him defend set pieces, where his ability to fly could be a nice addition.
Choosing the Belgian in a pivotal match will also foster trust because it shows that the Old Trafford management believes in their new player. His growth will also be aided by the experience of playing against one of United’s fiercest opponents.
Lammens could have history on his side
Alex Stepney was another 23-year-old goalie who United signed about 60 years ago.
When the Englishman made his debut, the Red Devils defeated a strong Manchester City team 1-0.
Interestingly, Stepney stayed at Old Trafford for 12 years, during which time the team won the FA Cup, the Charity Shield, the first European Cup, and the old English League First Division.
When you’re good enough, you’re old enough at United. For the Manchester Derby, Amorim needs to have some faith and put his trust in Lammens.
