Ten Hag shortlisted for shock managerial return just two weeks after humiliating Leverkusen sack – report

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly received an approach to return to the dugout, just two weeks after he was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen.

Ten Hag relieved of his duties by Leverkusen

Following United’s dismissal of Ten Hag in November of the previous year, the Dutch manager made his return to football management in May when Leverkusen appointed him to take over from Xabi Alonso.

Ten Hag signed a two-year contract with Leverkusen.

Nevertheless, Ten Hag was unceremoniously dismissed by Leverkusen after only two Bundesliga matches. The club made the decision to part ways following their 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen.

Leverkusen allowed two late goals to slip through, including a heartbreaking equaliser in the 94th minute, despite having a player advantage after Nicklas Stark received a red card in the second half.

Ten Hag’s other Bundesliga match resulted in a 2-1 loss to Hoffenheim during the opening weekend of the season.

It subsequently became clear that the 55-year-old faced difficulties in establishing rapport with the team and had conflicts with the club’s management, primarily due to his efforts to alter their transfer strategies and advocate for players from his own SEG agency.

Rather than prolong an unfavorable situation, Leverkusen opted to terminate the relationship as swiftly as possible.

However, just two weeks later, Ten Hag is already being considered for another managerial position, one that is familiar to him – FC Twente.

Ten Hag a candidate for FC Twente role

FC Twente are on the hunt for a new manager after parting ways with Joseph Oosting earlier this month.

According to PSV Inside [via SportWitness], FC Twente are experiencing some difficulties in their search for a replacement but they’re still looking at a number of options.

It’s understood that Ten Hag is one of three coaches who have been approached. The other two are Mark van Bommel and former United assistant Rene Hake.

However, John van den Brom is named as the “leading candidate” to assume the position.

Ten Hag played for FC Twente and even began his coaching career there, working with the youth sides before serving as assistant to Fred Rutten and later Steve McClaren.
