Sesko under the microscope: How did Man United striker perform for Slovenia?

Benjamin Sesko, a 22-year-old attacker for Manchester United, provided a crucial assist late in Friday night’s 2-2 tie with Sweden to enable his Slovenian team earn a point.

In the closing moments of the 2026 World Cup qualifying match, Sesko’s strong play allowed the striker to elude the attention of two Swedish defenders before heading in the direction of Zan Vipotnik to make it 2-2.

Sesko has made four appearances since joining Man United, but he has only started once, against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup, despite his lackluster play.

The striker has played 80 minutes of Premier League football across three matches with Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley, but he could come into the XI for the Manchester derby with Manchester City next weekend, should a hamstring issue rule Matheus Cunha out of the match.

Sesko provided an assist in Slovenia draw

Although it was an encouraging performance, Sesko did not score against Sweden, marking five club and national team appearances this season without scoring.

The forward finished 15 of his 19 passes, had 33 touches, and won two of his six ground duels and one aerial duel, which resulted in the late assist, according to Sofascore.

Although it’s safe to argue that the striker hasn’t started his 2025–26 campaign yet, the fact that he has already played 90 minutes will help Man United.

On September 8, Slovenia will play Switzerland in their next World Cup qualifying match. Sesko will then head back to Manchester to get ready for the Manchester derby.

The forward has scored 16 goals for his nation. He left RB Leipzig in the summer after making 87 appearances for the German team, scoring 39 goals and dishing out eight assists.
