Manchester United “truly believes” that Senne Lammens will prove himself as he vies with Altay Bayindir for the primary goalkeeper position, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils primarily bolstered their offensive lineup during the summer, with INEOS investing approximately £200 million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.
Additionally, they acquired Paraguayan talent Diego Leon, while Lammens was signed to replace the costly disappointment Andre Onana.
Lammens joined Manchester United from Royal Antwerp in a transaction valued at £18.2 million plus add-ons, with Onana moving to Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan until the season concludes.
Onana had been benched by Ruben Amorim for the initial three Premier League matches of the season, with Bayindir stepping in as the starting goalkeeper.
The Cameroon international did secure a starting position against Grimsby Town in the League Cup; however, he committed two errors, leading to Manchester United’s defeat on penalties to the League Two team.
Fans are hopeful that Lammens has been signed to take on a starting role, but Amorim disclosed in his press conference on Friday that Bayindir will be the goalkeeper for the Manchester Derby on Sunday.
Amorim stated prior to the match: “Altay will continue. Different league, different country, different ball. They will compete for the position. It is evident. Altay will start. He is prepared to play, and he will play.”
Furthermore, Romano has clarified Lammens’ expected role at Manchester United this season, revealing on GiveMeSport’s Market Madness podcast: “I believe they will be contending for the first-team goalkeeper position, so it will not be guaranteed for anyone, but I am confident that Senne Lammens is also a strong contender.
“I think Manchester United really trust him for the present, but also the future. They believe that this is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world, and so they really trust this boy.
“They wanted Lammens strongly. Obviously, there was also the opportunity to go for Emi Martinez, which is a completely different profile – obviously to add some leadership, but also with different costs in terms of salary and transfer fee.
“So they decided for Lammens, because they believe this is the ideal solution for the present and the future. I’m sure that Lammens has a very good chances to be the starting goalkeeper at Manchester United.”
In his press conference, Amorim added on Lammens: “We are really pleased, he is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential.
“We are in a moment where we need a goalkeeper to be really strong, have a lot of experience, but also in a moment we have to look at the present, but with focus on the future, a little bit both. He is one more option to play. He will be ready.”
