Report: Manchester United now interested in signing star who Newcastle regret selling

Manchester United are the latest big-name club to have been linked with a move for former Newcastle United star Elliot Anderson.

Anderson was arguably the most significant beneficiary of the international break. Indeed, the former Newcastle United midfielder made his debut for England against Andorra, subsequently impressing once more in their 5-0 victory over Serbia a few days later.

Newcastle reluctantly transferred Anderson to Nottingham Forest in 2024 to maintain financial balance. Considering his background as a Newcastle United academy graduate, the club regarded every penny received from his sale as ‘pure profit’ on their financial statements.

This transfer, along with Yankuba Minteh’s move to Brighton, enabled Newcastle to evade penalties. Had they violated the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), they risked a points deduction.

The 22-year-old has excelled at Forest, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top central midfielders. Consequently, Newcastle supporters are eager for the club to re-sign Anderson.

However, it appears that Manchester United may also be interested in pursuing him.

Manchester United interested in Elliot Anderson

As reported by TEAMtalk, the prominent club at Old Trafford continues to show interest in the Forest player.

It is indicated that Ruben Amorim has been informed that he will have financial resources available for January, with Anderson identified as a target for the midfield.

The article suggests that their interest in the Forest player is intensifying, despite him being under contract at the City Ground until the summer of 2029.

Newcastle already regrets the decision to sell Anderson, thus the possibility of him transferring to a rival club would exacerbate an already unfavorable situation.

With all due respect to Forest, it is undoubtedly more feasible to acquire a player from them than it would be from the Red Devils, considering the disparity in their wage structures.

How much did Newcastle United sell Elliot Anderson for?

Newcastle transferred Anderson for approximately £35 million, a sum that is already appearing quite reasonable.

To exacerbate the situation, Newcastle allocated a considerable portion of that amount when acquiring former Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos for about £20 million.

Consequently, the club only realized a net gain of roughly £15 million from the sale of Anderson, who now seems to be one of the most promising English talents available.

Eddie Howe has cautioned that the Anderson situation may recur at Newcastle, as the PSR effectively incentivizes clubs to sell their academy products due to the profit rule.

The manager of Newcastle United remarked: “I believe that this instance is quite exceptional because I anticipate that similar occurrences will take place again, not only here but also at other football clubs, when players are sold for financial motives.”
