Harry Maguire, a defender who demanded repairs in the summer, received a positive response to Manchester United’s transfer request. The 32-year-old’s prediction that there will be “a lot of changes” during the transfer window came true immediately after Ruben Amorim changed his team’s composition.
With a combined expenditure of over £200 million, United transformed their attack by adding Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. It would be reasonable to consider all three players to be part of Amorim’s new starting XI, even if Sesko, 22, was still to arrive at Old Trafford.
The same could be said for Senne Lammens, the goalie, who was acquired on deadline day from Royal Antwerp. Although the Belgian has not yet made his United debut in goal, he ought to be the team’s new number one given the worries surrounding current goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, who has reportedly agreed to a loan move to Trabzonspor.
However, United’s departures—no fewer than 12 players have left the team either permanently or on loan—may be even more significant. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Rasmus Hojlund have all left on temporary contracts, while wingers Antony and Alejandro Garnacho have moved on permanent moves.
The Red Devils have been slow out of the gates this season, but Amorim can’t say he hasn’t been handed the means to make his own imprint on the team. And Maguire has also got his way after urging the club to take action over the summer months.
“We will make a lot of changes in the summer at the club,” said the England international in May. “There will be a lot of players who leave and hopefully a lot of players will come in.
“And that’s down to the club to make sure they get that right, and it’s down to us players to make sure that we are the ones that are involved.”
After placing 15th in the Premier League the previous season, it was expected that United would have financial difficulties this summer. They failed to qualify for any European competition for the first time in 10 years as a result of that and their loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
A net expenditure of about £160 million, however, demonstrated that the coffers were far from empty. In addition, co-owners Ineos supported the boss in the transfer market, demonstrating their dedication to Amorim’s mission.
Maguire has only made two Premier League appearances off the bench this season, which has led to him being left out of Amorim’s starting lineup. Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, and Matthijs de Ligt are Amorim’s favored center-back trio, and Lisandro Martinez is still recuperating from a severe knee injury he sustained in February.
In their quest to restore their previous glory, United lacks the time necessary for such extensive changes to take impact at Old Trafford. However, neither Maguire nor the supporters can be upset that the team hasn’t done more to regain its position as the leader.
