“My understanding was…”: Tuchel gives his verdict on Mason Greenwood’s England future

The future of Mason Greenwood, a former forward for Manchester United, on the international scene is still very much in doubt.

With 22 goals across all competitions for Olympique de Marseille last season, the Carrington academy product was on fire.

With just one goal in the first three games of the new season, the Englishman is already off the mark.

Jamaica chaos

Greenwood has not been considered for the English national team since his legal issues ended his career at Manchester United and probably in the Premier League.

He was therefore in the process of taking Jamaica as his new foreign allegiance.

Greenwood, however, surprisingly declined the opportunity to play for the Jamaicans during the current international break.

“We got a passport and we thought he would be coming to this camp, but after talking to his family, he’s not going to commit to anybody at this time,” national team manager Steve McClaren clarified.

Possible England return

This has stoked rumors that the 23-year-old would be set for a sensational Three Lions recall.

In remarks reported by the BBC, England manager Thomas Tuchel, however, has denied these rumors.

“I have not spoken to him until now,” the German said at his press conference. I haven’t communicated with him or his camp.

“I understood that he tries to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give it another thought,” he explained. He was not considered at the time, and we do not have him on our team’s radar.

Although these remarks imply that Greenwood will not be rejoining the England squad anytime soon, it was also implied that this was mostly due to his alleged desire to play for Jamaica.

It would seem like a huge risk for any England manager to bring Greenwood back into the fold given the highly contentious legal matter that consumed him during his last days as a United player.
