Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United did not want to sign David de Gea in the summer transfer window

The decision on De Gea:
Fabrizio Romano has now disclosed that the Red Devils did not genuinely intend to re-sign the Fiorentina veteran to Old Trafford this summer. De Gea arrived at Old Trafford to participate in a pre-season friendly; however, United chose not to re-sign him, even though they had the option to do so at a lower cost.
The club decided to acquire Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens on the final day of the transfer window for approximately £18 million. The Spanish goalkeeper has recently spoken out regarding his exit from United, yet the club has evidently indicated that their strategy is now to concentrate on the future rather than revert to the past.
The right decision and the need for a new era:
United made a prudent decision by opting not to re-sign the 34-year-old goalkeeper this summer. He enjoyed an illustrious career at Old Trafford; however, his recent struggles with distribution and several critical errors have cast doubt on his current form and performance. Amorim’s present approach depends on a goalkeeper capable of effectively playing from the back. In this regard, despite De Gea’s vast experience and shot-stopping skills, he has failed to deliver the style that is now required.
United’s confidence in Senne Lammens illustrates the club’s strategic thinking. The young goalkeeper is an exceptional shot-stopper, and his assurance in the penalty area will bolster the team. While the 23-year-old still has room for improvement in his long distribution, his innate talent and energetic style align seamlessly with the club’s philosophy.
Nevertheless, United must remain vigilant about future prospects, with Mike Maignan as a potential candidate. The AC Milan goalkeeper is consistently regarded as one of the top goalkeepers globally. His blend of outstanding shot-stopping and distribution renders him a complete asset. Maignan commands the penalty area and provides relief to defenses. He is currently entangled in a complex contract situation at Milan, and should United seek an upgrade beyond Lammens in the years ahead, Maignan could emerge as the ideal choice. This is why the club’s actions during this transfer window were not merely about reshaping the squad; they conveyed a message that United is progressing beyond nostalgia, focusing instead on future development.
