Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim sees late squad addition after summer transfer labelled ‘panic buy’

After a challenging start to the season, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has had a week to assess his team’s current position. The Portuguese coach will realize he has more work to do with his players after the Red Devils narrowly defeated Burnley in their season-opening match.

For the next several days, the majority of his team will be playing for their national teams, but Amorim’s attention will be on another crucial game. United is in dire need of some positive momentum, and Manchester City will be waiting in a week.

Even if the transfer window hasn’t ended yet—United has restocked their front line and brought in Senne Lammens as a new goalkeeper—January already looks imminent. After missing out on a midfield player, there is already conjecture about what United might do in the upcoming transfer window.

However, Amorim may still need to focus on reaching that point. After three Premier League games, United is in ninth place, but they are already eliminated from the Carabao Cup.

Below, Mirror Football examines some of the most recent stories that are now making the rounds around Old Trafford.

First team addition

After Rhys Bennett was unable to get a loan deal this summer, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim may decide to use the player in his starting lineup. The defender intended to get more experience at a higher level this season after spending some time on loan at Fleetwood Town last season.

Although Bennett may now participate in first team training, the Manchester Evenings News stated that a loan move was the “most logical option” for his next course of action. The 21-year-old is claimed to have “outgrown academy football” and may be prepared for a promotion after a staff member commented, “Rhys has his sights set high.”

Man Utd eye January move

According to Fichajes, Manchester United is thinking about trying again to recruit Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher. During the summer transfer window, United lost out on a loan deal for the former Chelsea player.

Despite playing just 84 minutes in Atleti’s first three 2025–26 games, Gallagher is reportedly still being considered by the Red Devils. According to the Spanish publication, the team will try again in January for their next chance.

According to the article, Gallagher would be interested in returning to the Premier League.

Panic buy

Ben Foster, a former Manchester United goalie, called the team’s deadline-day acquisition of Senne Lammens a “panic buy.” After Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana had a rough start to the season, the Red Devils acquired the Belgian star late in the transfer window.

Foster said on his Fozcast podcast : “Being a goalkeeper for United is the hardest goalkeeping position to play in world football. You need someone with broad shoulders.

“I’ve watched a lot of videos of him [Lammens] on YouTube …and he looks on the eye test like he’s a competent goalkeeper. I’m yet to see what he’s like with the ball at his feet though and I think he’s a panic buy.

“United have probably always got some sort of list of goalkeepers that they look at and they keep tabs on. There will be scouts all over the world…but I don’t think they’ve done an in-depth analysis. A deadline day goalkeeper signing tells me that your club is desperate.”
