With their high-profile matches against Manchester City and Chelsea approaching, Manchester United has been dealt yet another injury problem during the international break.
Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim is already eagerly awaiting word on the health of both summer additions Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha, who were both substituted out of Saturday’s 3-2 victory over recently promoted Burnley at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Although Cunha later withdrew from Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for their final 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia, Amorim stated that he was uncertain of the severity of those injuries following the team’s thrilling first victory of the season, which was sealed by Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time penalty.
Following Diogo Dalot’s withdrawal from Portugal duty on Thursday ahead of games against Armenia and Hungary, United can now add the versatile full-back to their list of injury concerns.
Prior to Saturday’s trip to Yerevan, former Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares was called up as a replacement after Dalot complained of “muscle discomfort,” according to the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). Portugal’s health and performance unit then released Dalot from Roberto Martinez’s squad.
Dalot, who started two of their three Premier League games this season and came off the bench early in the second half of the other, along with the Carabao Cup loss at Grimsby, will now return to Manchester United for additional evaluation.
After the international break, Amorim will be hopeful that Dalot, Cunha, and Mount can all return soon because they have some important games coming up.
Next weekend, United will travel to the Etihad Stadium to play City in the most recent Manchester derby. On September 20, they will welcome Chelsea at Old Trafford. In October, they also play Liverpool at Anfield.
“What an incredible environment, it’s great to be here,” Cunha posted on Instagram in response to his personal injury scare against Burnley. I will return soon, always grateful and joyful. I appreciate all of the messages.
Asked about Cunha and Mount after the Burnley game, Amorim – also without long-term absentee Lisandro Martinez at present – said: “It was hard to lose Cunha and Mason Mount, because Mason Mount played 30 minutes with an injury.
“I’m concerned about that, because they are so important for us. We will see.
“I don’t know [how they are], I don’t know. We will check them. We need those guys really bad to be really competitive.”
