Man Utd Could Save Millions on Amorim Sacking as Key Date Set

Manchester United could save millions on sacking Ruben Amorim, with the scenario laid out in a new report.

Amorim, who holds the record for the lowest win percentage of any permanent manager at United since World War II, experienced his 18th defeat in 47 matches in charge on Sunday, as his team fell 3-0 to rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

In the Premier League, the Portuguese manager has garnered only 31 points from 31 matches, achieving a mere eight victories during a troubling period since he assumed the role in November 2024.

Following a lackluster 15th place finish last season, along with a loss in the Europa League final to Spurs, the pressure on Amorim has intensified after United’s poorest start to a Premier League season.

A report from The Mirror suggested that Amorim ‘effectively’ has three matches to secure his position at Old Trafford, with upcoming fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford, and Sunderland in the next few weeks.

Conversely, a separate article from the Daily Mail outlines reasons why United might delay dismissing Amorim for the time being.

When he took over from Erik ten Hag just over a year ago, Amorim entered into a two-and-a-half-year contract with an annual salary of £6.5 million.

This contract includes a 12-month extension and was finalized after United compensated Sporting £9.2 million to release him from his previous contract.

However, should United choose to terminate Amorim’s contract before he completes one year in the role, they will also need to provide him with compensation.

If United decide to abandon the Amorim project and part ways with him before November 1, when they face Nottingham Forest, they will be obligated to pay him £12 million, and it is likely that the coaching staff will also receive compensation.

United’s enormous compensation figures

Since Sir Alex Ferguson concluded his illustrious tenure at United in 2013, the club has expended over £54 million in compensation for five different managers, all of whom were ultimately dismissed.

David Moyes was awarded £5.2 million, whereas Louis van Gaal received £8.4 million upon his dismissal, despite having secured the FA Cup.

Furthermore, Jose Mourinho garnered a record £19.6 million, with his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag closely trailing with compensations of £10.5 million and £10.4 million, respectively.

Amorim would find himself right in the middle of this range if INEOS decides to withdraw.

Following the match against Sunderland, United will face the champions Liverpool on 19 October, before welcoming Brighton the subsequent weekend.
