Kobbie Mainoo lays out conditions for January exit at Man Utd as agreed move is revealed

Kobbie Mainoo has allegedly issued Manchester United a ‘play me or let me leave’ ultimatum, following new revelations about a transfer he consented to earlier this summer. Sources have informed TEAMtalk of the Red Devils’ unwavering commitment to the player, expressing their support for him to rejuvenate his career at Old Trafford.

The midfielder garnered attention during the last week of the transfer window when he expressed his desire to exit Old Trafford, having grown discontented with his limited role under Ruben Amorim. Although Manchester United successfully retained him by thwarting his attempts to leave, this request underscored a decline in the player’s prospects since the Portuguese coach took over from Erik ten Hag.

Mainoo emerged on the scene approximately 18 months ago with remarkable performances in the United midfield. He not only scored a crucial goal in the FA Cup final but also became an essential player in Gareth Southgate’s England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final.

Nevertheless, with Amorim swiftly implementing his 3-4-2-1 formation at United, Mainoo unexpectedly found himself sidelined, as the attacking midfielder appears to be largely incompatible with the United manager’s tactics.

Concerned about jeopardizing his position in the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, he requested that United permit him to leave on a temporary basis.

Currently, ESPN reports that a transfer to Napoli has been fully agreed upon, with Mainoo eager to make a temporary move to join the Serie A champions and create a midfield trio alongside his former teammate Scott McTominay and another summer signing, Kevin De Bruyne.

The report adds, though, that the transfer could be resurrected in the winter window if Mainoo doesn’t earn more regular playing time before then, with the player’s absence from Thomas Tuchel’s most recent squad underlining to him why he will likely need to move to resurrect his career.

Man Utd’s plans for Kobbie Mainoo revealed as player delivers ultimatum

Mainoo is experiencing frustration due to his limited participation under Amorim, having only started 12 out of the Portuguese manager’s 30 Premier League matches thus far.

With Amorim indicating that Mainoo is essentially competing directly with captain Bruno Fernandes for playing time, the midfielder is prepared to push for a transfer in January if his circumstances do not improve.

“He’s (Mainoo) currently vying for the position alongside Bruno, and I made changes to two midfielders,” Amorim stated following the 1-1 draw against Fulham last month.

“I allowed Mason Mount to play there because we aimed to score, and when I made the substitution, I believed the team needed to revert to one holding midfielder close to Bruno.

“Thus, he must contend for the position with Bruno, as is expected at Manchester United. At times, he will play alongside Bruno, but presently he is competing in training with Bruno for that position.”

Although he was an unused substitute in United’s initial two Premier League matches of the season, he did start the Carabao Cup match against Grimsby and also came off the bench during the recent 3-2 victory over Burnley.

In fact, the club’s current position is that they do not wish to allow Mainoo to depart, with sources informing reporter Dean Jones that the 20-year-old has their complete backing to rejuvenate his career at Old Trafford.

Moreover, sources assert that they are amenable to a new agreement with the midfielder if he can fully accept the challenge of becoming a significant first-team player.

Mainoo ranks among the lower earners at the club, earning approximately £30,000 per week, and he is at a pivotal point in his career where he and his representatives feel the urgency to advance.

However, they remain unconvinced that Amorim envisions him as a regular starter in the first team, although we have been informed that Mainoo has committed to working hard and doing everything possible to impress the manager in the weeks and months ahead.

Furthermore, sources state Amorim is willing to give him opportunities and that he remains part of their long-term plans at Old Trafford.

Man Utd latest: Amorim sack reports flipped; all-time great to leave

In the meantime, assertions that United have already begun searching for a successor to Amorim following a lackluster start to the season have been swiftly downplayed, as INEOS is focusing on long-term planning with the Portuguese manager, potentially paving the way for a contract extension.

Additionally, the effort for United to reestablish themselves among the Premier League elite has concentrated on the midfield, with sources informing TEAMtalk of the club’s determination to enhance their midfield with TWO prominent signings – and Amorim and his team are already aware of the ideal duo, valued at a total of £160m, that they aspire to acquire.

Lastly, a second source has strongly indicated that it is the end of the line for a legendary figure at Manchester United, with no fewer than FIVE clubs already considering a move in 2026.
