Jose Mourinho has been tipped to make a huge return to management following his sacking from Fenerbahce.
In June 2024, the Portuguese was introduced as Fenerbahce’s new manager, and throughout his first season, he guided the team to second place.
However, after being relieved of his responsibilities just two league games into the season, Mourinho—who had been outspoken about refereeing in Turkey—was unable to finish his second season.
After losing 1-0 on aggregate against Benfica in the play-offs, Fenerbahce was eliminated and did not advance to the Champions League first phase.
A day after the loss, the Turkish powerhouses made their decision, firing Mourinho for the eighth time in his illustrious career.
Rumors are already circulating regarding Mourinho’s quick return to the dugout, despite reports that he is due a severance package of roughly £13 million.
Additionally, Rangers great Ally McCoist has said that Mourinho would be “great for the game” in Scotland and has urged his old team to sign him.
Russell Martin, a former Southampton manager, was just hired by the Glasgow giants, but he has had a terrible start to life at Ibrox. Rangers lost to Club Brugge 9-1 in the Champions League aggregate, and they have lost their last four league games.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist said: “I’ll take Jose. Listen, there’s a man in the job now [Russell Martin]. But if you’re asking me, further down the line, would I take Jose at Ibrox? Absolutely, I would. Absolutely.
“There’s a lot of people of the opinion that he’s maybe by his sell-by date. I’m not so sure, I’m not so sure. I would love to see him in Scottish football. I just think he’s big news, I think he’s great for the game.
“I think we love him, he creates interest, he creates stories, he’s different. The more people like that for me, the better. He would certainly bring a bit of life to things, wouldn’t he?”
Mourinho’s wages could be a stumbling block, with it reported that his pay packet at Fenerbahce was £9.1million-a-year.
He has made no secret of his appreciation of Scottish football though, stating that the top flight “is a league of passion” while praising Rangers and Celtic and their fans.
Speaking in March, he said: “Celtic and Rangers are two big clubs with incredible history, also in Europe. I have lots of respect. They are big clubs with big fan bases, expectations.”
After Nuno Espirito Santo made candid remarks about his circumstances at the City Ground amid rumors of a tense relationship with owner Evangelos Maranakis, Mourinho was also mentioned as a possible candidate for the Nottingham Forest position should they decide to fire him.
Mick Brown, a former top scout for Sunderland and United, stated that he thinks Mourinho would “open” to rejoining Forest in the Premier League.
