Harry Maguire made a transfer request, and Manchester United complied after the defender made significant demands during the summer transfer window.
The 32-year-old’s prediction that there will be “a lot of changes” during the transfer window came true when Ruben Amorim reorganized his team’s front line. By spending around £200 million to acquire Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, United changed their offensive options.
All three of the newcomers might be seen as essential to Amorim’s preferred starting lineup, even though Sesko, 22, was the last to arrive at Old Trafford. The same could be said for Senne Lammens, the goalie, who arrived on deadline day from Royal Antwerp.
Given the uncertainty surrounding current goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, who has reportedly agreed to a loan deal to Trabzonspor, the Belgian, who has not yet been in goal for United, is predicted to take his place as the team’s number one.
However, United’s departures—no fewer than 12 players left the team on either temporary or permanent contracts—are even more noteworthy. While Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Rasmus Hojlund have all left on loan, wingers Antony and Alejandro Garnacho have signed permanent contracts.
The Red Devils have made a sluggish start to the campaign, but Amorim cannot claim he hasn’t been given the tools to stamp his authority on the side. Maguire has also achieved his objective after pressing the club to act decisively during the summer transfer window.
Speaking in May, Maguire said: “We will make a lot of changes in the summer at the club. There will be a lot of players who leave and hopefully a lot of players will come in.
“And that’s down to the club to make sure they get that right, and it’s down to us players to make sure that we are the ones that are involved.”
After placing 15th in the Premier League the previous season, United was predicted to be in financial straits this summer. They were eliminated from European play for the first time in 10 years as a result of that and their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. A net spend of about £160 million, however, showed that the war fund was far from empty.
Maguire, however, has only made two Premier League substitute appearances so far this season and has been left out of Amorim’s starting team.
Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, and Matthijs de Ligt have been Amorim’s preferred defensive trio, and Lisandro Martinez is still recovering from a serious knee injury he suffered in February.
