Exclusive: Glazers could agree Man United takeover after clause revealed

The Glazers, co-owners of Manchester United, may consider a sale once substantial advancements are achieved in the club’s new stadium project, according to sources cited by Football Insider.

In February 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7 percent stake in Manchester United after finalizing a £1.25 billion agreement with the Glazers.

The chief of INEOS was chosen as the preferred bidder over Sheikh Jassim, who aimed for a complete takeover but was unable to demonstrate sufficient proof of funds.

The Glazers’ drag-along rights regarding Manchester United became effective on 13 August, enabling them to compel Ratcliffe to divest his stake to a third party if a suitable agreement is reached.

Sources indicate that the American family is not expected to consent to a sale in the immediate future; however, they may be more amenable to a transaction once progress is made on the construction of the club’s new stadium.

How much could Man United’s new stadium cost?

Manchester United has revealed intentions to construct a stadium with a capacity of 100,000 seats as part of the government’s initiative to revitalize the Old Trafford region.

Ratcliffe has emphasized his desire for the new stadium, which the club estimates will cost approximately £2 billion, to be the “world’s greatest” and potentially completed within a five-year timeframe.

Nevertheless, finance expert Stefan Borson informed Football Insider that Manchester United may be confronted with a £4 billion expense due to rising inflation.

Manchester United is actively seeking funding for their new stadium prior to commencing the project.

According to sources, substantial advancements in the development could prompt the Glazers to reevaluate their takeover options, as a new facility is likely to enhance the club’s value in the eyes of potential investors.

How much of Man United do the Glazers own?

The Glazers, who acquired a 98 percent stake in Old Trafford in 2005, have since experienced a reduction in their shareholding to 48.9 percent.

In the meantime, Ratcliffe has raised his stake in Manchester United to 28.9 percent after contributing an additional £238 million since his initial investment in the club.

The Manchester giants reported a record club revenue of £661.8 million in their most recent financial accounts for 2023-24, despite incurring a net loss of £113.2 million.

Ruben Amorim is aiming to enhance performance on the field this season following his team’s 15th place finish in the Premier League table for 2024-25.

Manchester United has secured four points from their first three matches of the season, with a derby match against Manchester City scheduled for Sunday (14 September).
