DoF admits they needed ‘state, sheikh, billionaire’ to sign Manchester United man this summer

Sebastien Kehl, the director of football for Borussia Dortmund, said that the team talked about acquiring Jadon Sancho from Manchester United this summer but was unable to do so without financial assistance.

In an interview with BILD today, the Dortmund manager talks about the team’s summer transfer business.

They have had yet another hectic window, and they negotiated last-minute agreements for Carney Chukwuemeka, Aaron Anselmino, and Fabio Silva right up until the last minute.

The Bundesliga team’s window was dominated by the former’s return following a prior loan stint with the club.

After Chelsea made it obvious that they would not be making Jadon Sancho’s loan deal permanent this summer, Manchester United placed him on the bomb list early on, sparking speculation among many supporters about his possible return.

Naturally, he has already visited Dortmund again, this time on loan, and was instrumental in their run to the Champions League final.

As a result, a second visit would have been greatly appreciated; nevertheless, Kehl claims that even though he was considered internally, it was not feasible for them.

“Of course, we also addressed the issue internally at some point, but there must be a feasible economic framework,” he said.

“With the transfers we have made, we have invested approximately €100m in new players, similar to last summer. But there is no state, no sheikh, no billionaire behind us.

“We have to earn our own money and, in the long run, can only spend what we previously earned. We have exhausted our financial possibilities for this transfer period.”
