Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure at Manchester United following a decisive 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League.
The team has experienced its poorest start to a league season since the 1992/93 season, accumulating only four points from their first four matches. This latest loss also signifies that Amorim holds the lowest win percentage of any permanent manager at United since the conclusion of the Second World War.
The situation does not improve as they face Chelsea at home in their next Premier League match; however, Amorim remains optimistic about his ability to rectify the situation if granted additional time in his position. In his most recent GIVEMESPORT newsletter, well-known transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano shared a concise update regarding the future of the United head coach.
“It’s a difficult moment of course but Amorim wants to give his best for Man United, he’s convinced that with time he will sort things,” he said.
Speaking after the derby defeat on Sunday evening, Amorim reiterated that he was fully committed to the job in hand at United and that he would continue to give his all as long as he remained in the role.
“My message is that I am going to give everything,” he told reporters. “I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. That was always the same message. It is not my decision, the rest. Until I am here, I will do my best. I really want to win games. I am suffering more than them.”
United great Gary Neville also weighed in on the debate surrounding Amorim and claimed he would be under even more pressure if he didn’t start to adapt his tactics. The Portuguese head coach has been heavily criticised for his constant use of a three-man defence and the belief he is reluctant to try something new.
“I think there will be some pressure applied to the manager and his rigidity of sticking with the system,” Neville told Sky Sports. “City have beaten them well and comfortably. United had some good moments in the game – the first 15 minutes and the first five minutes of the second half. City, in big moments, have had better players. Foden, Doku, Haaland have stood out.
“There have been times when I have seen United lose this type of match when I feel angry and frustrated. I just feel nothing, which is even worse. This has been a nothing of a performance. United have just been beaten. With Chelsea next week, another defeat and big questions would start to be asked.”
