Amorim scouts ‘in love’ as Man Utd shortlist glitzy £160m duo for next phase of rebuild

The engine room has become the focus of Manchester United’s efforts to regain their Premier League supremacy, and insiders have confirmed to TEAMtalk the team’s intention to strengthen their midfield with two high-profile additions.

United’s recruiters have identified the midfield as the next area for reinforcement under Ruben Amorim’s cautious eye, although their goals may be hampered by budgetary limitations and intense competition.

One of the main targets is Adam Wharton, the 21-year-old Blackburn Rovers product who is currently dazzling at Crystal Palace. United’s scouts are “in love” with his potential because of his poise, vision, and ability to control play, which have garnered him great reviews.

It won’t be easy to entice Wharton to leave Selhurst Park, though. Arsenal, Tottenham, and other Premier League rivals are circling, and Palace’s high asking price—rumoured to be above £60 million—makes United’s pursuit much more difficult.

In a crowded market, Wharton’s rising stock makes him difficult to acquire, and Crystal Palace has no intention of moving in January.

United dreaming of double swoop

However, the main attention is now on Carlos Baleba of Brighton, a 21-year-old Cameroonian sensation who has been compared to Moises Caicedo.

After Caicedo’s £115 million departure to Chelsea in 2023, Brighton, which is accustomed to big-money transactions, is staying fast at a £100 million valuation for Baleba because they think he could outperform his predecessor.

Baleba is a wonderful fit for the now-famous Amorim style because of his combination of toughness, ball-winning persistence, and progressive passing. According to insiders, the player is “very open” to moving to Old Trafford. His readiness might help United outbid Wharton, who has a growing number of suitors.

The club’s budget and financial Fair Play constraints are making it uncertain if United will be able to acquire both targets. Despite their want to support their manager, the club’s management may have to make difficult decisions to balance the books.

Although a January transfer for Baleba appears more likely, a summer 2026 double swoop is still the ideal scenario. United’s midfield makeover could either define their comeback or reveal the boundaries of their aspirations as they negotiate this competitive market.

Man Utd round-up: Casemiro on way out

Casemiro’s contract with United expires in the summer, and it is not anticipated that he will stay after that.

According to reports, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, and Sao Paulo are all interested in him.

In the meantime, a different report has reaffirmed Amorim’s intention to acquire Baleba.

Additionally, Laurie Whitwell, a United source, thinks Benjamin Sesko will start against Manchester City at the weekend.
