‘Advancing well and fast’: Romano issues major update over late United deal nobody saw coming

Manchester United have signed off on Andre Onana’s departure to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

Major developments over the weekend saw the Red Devils accept a proposal from Trabzonspor to take Onana off their hands for the campaign.

Andre Onana closing in on late summer move

United approved his departure right away, so it was up to the goalie to decide whether to leave Old Trafford or stay, acknowledging that he would be playing a much smaller role in the upcoming months.

Fabrizio Romano stated on Sunday that talks between the clubs were “advancing well and fast” and that there was increasing “confidence” that the player would sanction the move, suggesting that Onana has indeed chosen the former.

After that, the reporter gave it the “here we go” treatment, making sure that everyone was in accord.

INEOS forced to U-turn on initial goalkeeper decision

United said throughout the summer that they would not sign a new goalkeeper unless Onana was gone. However, despite offers from Saudi Arabian and AS Monaco clubs, they never took any meaningful action to make his departure easier.

Then, on deadline day last Monday, INEOS moved quickly to recruit 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp after both the Cameroonian and Ruben Amorim’s new first-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir had poor starts to 2025/2026.

With Bayindir probably being used in the FA Cup, he is set to overtake both Onana and Bayindir in the hierarchy to become the Reds’ number one.

Towards the end of the previous season, Amorim repeatedly stated his intention to demote Onana; the 29-year-old was completely left out of the matchday squads for four of the final seven Premier League games of 2024–2025.
